The successful candidate will build an outstanding independent research program in experimental or theoretical condensed matter physics, and will have the capacity to attract external funding from national competitive grants. The position will also be responsible for contributing to teaching and learning in the school, including participation in, and development of, innovative teaching and learning programs in the undergraduate physics curriculum.
The position builds on the school’s strength in Condensed Matter as well as Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics. The school participates in major research centres in these areas, including the $45M ARC Centre of Excellence in Future Low-Energy Electronics Technologies (FLEET, www.fleet.org.au), the Monash Centre for Atomically Thin Materials (www.monash.edu/atomically-thin-materials), and the Monash Centre for Electron Microscopy (www.platforms.monash.edu/mcem).

School of Physics and Astronomy is located within the Faculty of Science. In the past four years the School has gone through an exciting period of renewal – investing significantly in people and facilities. The School of Physics and Astronomy is committed to research and teaching of the highest quality in astronomy, astrophysics, experimental physics and theoretical physics; it aims to produce graduates with a solid foundation in physics. Although recognized internationally for research in several fields of physics, the School intends to significantly strengthen its research base to achieve the status of a top ranked physics department in Australia.
The School offers undergraduate programmes at the Clayton Campus, as well as supporting courses conducted in Malaysia. The School teaches units and major sequences in experimental and theoretical physics in the BSc degree and is involved in teaching the astronomy and astrophysics programmes in the Faculty of Science. The School also offers units as part of the Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Imaging and the Bachelor of Biomedical Science degrees.
The School’s major research activities include the ARC Centre of Excellence in Future Low - Energy Electronics Technologies(FLEET), ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational-wave Discovery(OzGrav), ARC Centre of Excellence for Particle Physics at the Terascale(CoEPP), the Monash Centre for Astrophysics, the Centre for Atomically Thin Materials and over a dozen ARC funded programmes.
The School is an active user of synchrotron radiation facilities, including the Australian Synchrotron, which is located adjacent to the Clayton Campus of Monash University. The School also has strong research interests in the Monash Centre for Electron Microscopy (MCEM), which houses a FEI Titan 80-300 FEG S/TEM, a JEOL 2100F FEG STEM, 3D atom probe field ion microscopes and other advanced microanalysis facilities.
The School has access to state-of-the-art facilities in the Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication, which is adjacent to the Australian Synchrotron at the Clayton Campus.
