Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a System Administrator to provide support for the Windows, Mac servers and systems of Computing Services, the coordinated Instructional Facilities (CIF), the colleges, and the administrative departments of the Newark campus. This position will provide technical planning and recommendations to management in consideration of hardware and configuration changes and will work closely with the designated departmental coordinators for ongoing support needs. The key duties of this position are the following:
Manages, maintains, and administers Windows, Mac OS, Unix/Linux desktop and server systems, backup infrastructure, internetworking devices, computing peripherals, applications and databases as appropriate with Rutgers Newark campus and OIT department objectives.
Analyzes and manages to completion error conditions which occur during program testing or actual operations.
Maintains detailed documentation including system information, hardware configuration, services, security settings, account settings, network settings, applications, procedures, updates, and maintenance performed regarding systems.
Assists with image provisioning, testing, deployment, scripting to automate tasks, updates, and patches to ensure a stable environment.
Confers with vendors regarding hardware and software concepts, capabilities, issues, and support.
Provides technical guidance and direction to computing staff, and to campus liaisons as appropriate.
Maintains an appropriate level of security, adhering to policies and standards as indicated by OIT's Information Protection and Security.
Adheres to industry best practices in securing and optimizing systems, networks, and applications.
Monitors access to the systems and tracks suspected security violations.
Manages and maintains the software collection within copyright laws and agreements on all systems.
Evaluates existing computer configuration and makes recommendations to management in the consideration of hardware configuration changes.
Participates in meeting with management, staff, and department coordinators to collaborate on new or revised plans, programs, procedures, and the result of evaluation studies, and use cases.
Prepares clear, technical and accurate reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Maintains and develops skills in emerging technologies in order to enhance support, while recognizing and reconciling the need to integrate these skills into the Rutgers environment.
Completes other work consistent with a basic understanding of the mission, vision, role, and goals of OIT objectives and collaboration with Newark Campus liaisons.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a Bachelor's degree in computer science or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Also requires five years of systems administration experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Requires a good technical understanding of internetworking devices and their associated operating systems, as well as an understanding of systems and network related programming concepts.
Requires the ability to correctly identify and diagnose common operating systems, application problems, and to document and implement appropriate resolution techniques for such problems.
Must be able to read, interpret, understand, and apply technical instructions and documentation.
Requires good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to handle multiple, shifting priorities.
Knowledge of Windows, Mac, and Unix/Linux desktop and server operating systems, internetworking devices, TCP/IP networking concepts.
Web Development and programming with knowledge of Git, versioning control, and best practices in security of websites.
Experience with content managements systems such as Drupal, WordPress, Joomla.
Experience with databases supporting third-party applications and websites.
Effectively work with clients and respond to their queries in a courteous and pleasant manner.
An attitude of responsibility for client inquiries, troubleshooting issues and following to completion.
The diplomacy and temperament to cooperate and work effectively in a team environment.
Ability to work in a stressful environment, handle multiple concurrent tasks, and handle constant interruptions.
Ability to speak, write, and communicate clearly in the English language.
Microsoft MCSE or MCSA training and certification.
Experience in a University environment.
Supports over 650 pcs, macs, printers, scanners, peripherals, networks, servers, in instructional and open access computer labs.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Must be able to lift and carry small items of equipment up to OSHA standards.
