The Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering (SSIE) in the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University (The State University of New York at Binghamton) invites applications for a faculty member, at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level, in Health Systems Engineering starting in Spring or Fall 2018. The Watson School is dedicated to the goal of building a diverse and inclusive teaching, research, and working environment. The position involves teaching at all levels from undergraduate courses to advanced graduate courses, and establishing theoretical and applied research in the area of Health Systems Engineering. Expertise in the broad area of health systems engineering, healthcare data science/analytics, population health, and/or healthcare information technology/systems is required; experience in theoretical developments and applications of applied optimization/operations research in healthcare is preferred.
The SSIE Department secures over 3 million dollars in research funding per year. Our faculty members work collaboratively with over 30 sponsors from industry and federal agencies. With an excellent and growing academic reputation, the SSIE Department is internationally renowned in the electronics manufacturing/electronics packaging arena. Another area of substantial growth is health systems, and our faculty works with several major healthcare organizations across the nation and abroad. The department is continuing significant expansion, with a total of four faculty positions planned for Spring 2018 and/or Fall 2018 (including this position).
The department currently has twenty-one (21) faculty members and offers a BS degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) and MS and PhD Degrees in both Systems Science (SS) and Industrial and Systems Engineering (or ISE). SSIE also offers a cutting edge executive health systems program in Manhattan. With about 250 undergraduate, 250 masters, and 120 doctoral students, the department is growing in numbers and in reputation. Among industrial and systems engineering departments, the program is positively regarded, ranking number 7 on the Princeton Review's list of "Colleges that Create Future," among other accolades. The successful candidate for this position will be expected to help increase the number of women, underrepresented minorities and persons with disabilities, as well as help increase external funding to support diverse populations. This is an affiliated position for the University's Health Sciences Transdisciplinary Areas of Excellence (TAE). The successful candidate will contribute to the development of this TAE as an area of research and teaching. The search committee will include members of the Health Sciences TAE steering committee as well as from the Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering. The candidate must have a doctoral degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering or a closely related field as well as good leadership skills, and should have an excellent record of scholarly publications. The candidate is expected to have a high potential to initiate and sustain an externally funded multi-disciplinary research program and to take a major role in the Health Systems Engineering research program. This position is part of the campus-wide healthcare cluster and, as such, the hire would be working closely with other individuals within this cluster. Expertise in the broad area of health systems engineering, healthcare data science/analytics, population health, and/or healthcare information technology/systems is required; experience in theoretical developments and applications of applied optimization/operations research in healthcare is preferred. Teaching experience is preferred.
