Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) provides the educational outreach functions for Cornell University's role as New York State's Land Grant University. Programmatically, Cornell Cooperative Extension connects the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Human Ecology (CHE) with 55 off-campus Associations, Integrated Pest Management, New York State Sea Grant, Area Specialists, and CCE New York City.
The Lake Erie Regional Grape Program (LERGP) was formed to work with the commercial grape industry in the Lake Erie grape region in New York and Pennsylvania. The purpose of this position is to provide commercial grape growers/producers with the knowledge and resources necessary to assess production and management practices that will enhance their profitability and sustain the growth of the juice and wine grape industry in the Lake Erie region.
Provide leadership for planning, implementing and evaluating educational programs that address grower identified needs and opportunities. Emphasis is on grape production including: soil and site selection, growth control, nutrition and water management, and harvest management. In association with LERGP team members, plan and implement educational programs utilizing a variety of methods. Deliver one-on-one consultations with key growers and industry partners related to program initiatives and available resources.
Provide producers and industry with a framework to analyze production and management alternatives and to maximize profit opportunities based on emerging best-management practices. Work with farms to analyze management strategies to expand production and profitability. Work with LERGP extension team to initiate and conduct appropriate applied research and field demonstrations with both regional and statewide implications in production and economics of commercial grape production as an educational outreach strategy. Support efforts in planning and implementing of regional and statewide events and conferences directly related to Cornell, Cooperative Extension or related collaborators.
In cooperation with LERGP team leader, prepare quarterly reports, impact statements, and yearly success stories on program progress and accomplishments. Communicate evaluation results, findings, and make recommendations to program partners and funders. Support Cornell University and Cooperative Extension system-wide initiatives through participation in program work teams, ad-hoc committees and advisory groups. Participate in professional development opportunities, conferences and workshops appropriate to program and personal skill enhancement.
This position is full-time (40 hours/week) and will be located at the Cornell Lake Erie Research and Extension Lab in Portland, New York. This is a one-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.
Bachelors Degree in Agriculture from an accredited institution with a major in Viticulture, Horticulture, or closely associated field and 2+ years of relevant work experience in Agribusiness, Crop Production, Cooperative Extension, or closely related fields, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must possess or have the ability to acquire a New York State Certified Pesticide Applicators License within one year from start date.
Fundamental competence utilizing current technology as a management and program delivery tool (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, Internet and Social Media).

Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to work with diverse audiences in group and one-on-one settings; working effectively with advisory boards and committees, community and funding partners.

Ability to work evenings and weekends as essential job functions require.
Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position, and have reliable transportation as well as have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver's license.
Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.
3+ years of relevant work experience.
Master Degree in Agriculture from an accredited institution with a major in viticulture or closely associated fields
Coursework in Weed Science, Crop Production, GIS, Economics of Production, Pest Management, Plant Pathology, Soils, Adult Education, and Communications.
Experience in initiating and conducting field demonstrations and in-depth applied research on general viticulture topics, including soil fertility, mechanization, and vine size management.
Familiarity with production evaluation software.
Knowledge and/or experience in current and emerging Grape and Wine Production and Marketing practices
Experience in conducting, interpreting, evaluating and communicating the results of applied research.
Ability to define, conduct and interpret applied research and demonstration projects.
Experience in writing grant proposals
New York State Certified Pesticide Applicators License.
