Job Requisition Number: 23925. Physical Plant’s mission is to continuously improve facility services for the campus community in partnership with clients and staff. The department is comprised of several separate units which include: the AVC Office (including Employee/Labor Relations, Payroll and Benefits), Support Services, Operations, Grounds, Custodial and Environmental Services, and Sustainability and Engineering Services. The position engages in projects requiring the highly specialized skills of Maintenance Machinist work for campus clients under general supervision.
MAINTENANCE MACHINIST Responsibilities include: physical repair of campus buildings including research labs and animal facilities. Tasks routinely performed include the following: Specification of appropriate materials needed for each job. Coordination of work with other shops in buildings, classrooms, research labs and animal facilities. Knowledge of processes and procedures utilized by each individual shop. Identify and resolve equipment malfunctions, work with manufacturer representatives and technical support. Maintain working knowledge of state-of-the-art tools and software through training and reading. Service, troubleshoot and repair all trade related equipment and other systems. Provide the end user with application information and technical support when needed. Responsibilities include: reading blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, and instructions for repair and maintenance of equipment. Uses milling, drilling, grinding and welding tools as well as other machines related to the craft. Troubleshoot and repair pumps, shafts, bearings, hydraulic controls and regulators. Equipment maintenance and repair of conveyers, vacuum pumps, and compressors. Maintain working knowledge of state-of-the-art tools and software through training and reading. Service, troubleshoot and repair all generators, engines, storage tanks and fuel delivery systems. Expertise in the fabrication of parts requiring exacting tolerances. This fabrication includes the use of calipers, welding equipment, and lathes, milling machines, drill presses, planers, balancers and grinders among others. Uses gas and electric welding tools efficiently. May work in closed or confined spaces. The ability to work safely on ladders and in small spaces within the campus environment. Set up and operate rigging to relocate or isolate equipment for repair and maintenance. Diagnose and troubleshoot condensate drain systems. Takes direction from the shop superintendent and/or the shop lead. The ability to work with other trades, project managers, campus clients and others to complete assigned tasks. Able to work independently when required.
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES Consult lead/supervisor/or project superintendents who administer requirements and standards for modification projects. Keep accurate work records and complete paperwork in a neat and timely manner. Define and describe materials, tools and/or equipment, work methods and task sequences. Serve as liaison with clients, relaying their needs and requirements to the appropriate department or superintendent. Obtain materials and equipment as required.

OTHER Perform other duties as assigned.•Must have completed a four year apprenticeship program or equivalent. •Employee must possess three years journeyman experience in a comparable position or related experience in a university, hospital or large building complex. •Education and training can be through documented experience and/or professional development through an accredited college or university. •Must be able to work in confined spaces. •Must be able to safely move supplies and objects up to 75 pounds with or without a reasonable accommodation. •Ability to work indoors/outdoors in fluctuating and/or extreme weather conditions. •Must be available to respond to emergencies, work on-call, rotating swing shift and holidays. •Adhere to Physical Plant—Campus Services’ work rules and Code of Conduct. •Must possess a thorough knowledge of the use and operation of machine and hand tools as well as equipment used in the machinist trade. •Working knowledge of metal fabrication principles and techniques. Additional knowledge in the working properties of various metals. Methods of operation, maintenance, installation and repair of industrial pumps, valves, hydraulic controls and actuators. •General knowledge and a high level of skills in the use of welding and gas cutting equipment. •Ability to perform a variety of repair and maintenance work around the shop, campus and outlying areas. •The ability to take direction and pass on information to others in both written form and spoken direction. •Must possess excellent communication skills and ability to interact in a positive manner with campus community, including students, building managers, academic and craft personnel in a multi-cultural environment. •Ability to track jobs to completion and prioritize work to be done. •Ability to read and understand equipment manufactures manuals, service requests, blueprints, appropriate state and local government codes, trade-specific manuals and practices. Draft diagrams and schematics and to determine how the fixture or equipment should perform. •Knowledge of relevant Building Codes, DHI Standards, ADA Regulations, Fire Codes and University Accessibility guidelines. •Ability to communicate clearly over the telephone and two-way radio. •Ability to execute all job assignments in a timely manner. This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Skilled Crafts Unit (KB) between the University of California and the Alameda County Building and Construction Trades Council (ACBCTC).
