The Technical Assistant/Machinist will provide lead technical assistance for the assembly and testing of a large new detector being constructed in clean rooms at Brown physics, that will then be shipped to the Sanford US underground research facility (SURF) for final operation. This position will play an integral part in the construction of the two 270-photomultiplier tube arrays that act as a Xenon detector system. This effort is part of the LZ Dark Matter Experiment and is 100% grant funded by the Department of Energy.
High School degree plus minimum of 5 years of related experience in engineering machine shop, or equivalent combination of education/experience. Trade school certification for machinist program preferred.
Ability to handle delicate science equipment or technical equipment.
Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to give coherent and informative training presentations.
Strong organizational skills, including the ability to interact effectively with faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students and staff.
Proficiency with computers with strong aptitude to learn new systems and applications. Some knowledge of one or more of Autocad, SolidWorks,,Python, C++, Matlab.
Ability to develop knowledge of photomultiplier tube operation and testing protocols (~500 PMTs to be tested during detector array construction).
Able to adhere to cleanroom protocols.
Ability to develop knowledge of optimal procedures to ensure successful assembly and operation of the detector in ultra-clean environment.
