: We are seeking a Physicist to invent, develop, and apply models for the kinetic simulation of the generation and transport of low temperature, dynamic plasmas\. Our primary simulation tool, the Aleph code, combines PIC and DSMC methodology in an unstructured mesh framework to simulate electrostatically coupled plasmas\. Aleph is massively parallel, incorporates load balancing methods, and uses a number of advanced algorithms to accommodate large variations in spatial and temporal scales\. We have a strongly connected concurrent experimental program\. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Participate in research that seeks to understand and simulate basic plasma physics centered on the interaction between dynamic boundaries and the host plasma+ Participate in basic research and development activities supporting the simulation of transient plasma generation and plasma flow+ Perform extensive model development, code development, and simulation\-based scientific investigation as part of a multi\-disciplinary team Required: + PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Mathematics, or other closely related discipline+ Experience in computational science+ Experience in plasma physics modeling+ Experience in one or more of the following fields of research: Gas/Plasma Chemistry, Electromagnetics, Electrical Discharge, or RF+ Good communication skills as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer\-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences+ Current, active DoE L clearance Desired: + Experience in code development in an object\-oriented language such as C/C\+\+ or other relevant language+ Experience in code development related to a plasma modeling simulation tool+ Experience working in team\-based software development+ Experience in code validation efforts including but not limited to: working in tandem with experimentalists, conducting the experiments for validation, or other demonstrated validation process Department Description: Department 1878 has three main thrust areas: Laser Remote Sensing, Semiconductor Optics, and Low Temperature Plasma Physics\. The department conducts innovative research and application development in LIDAR remote sensing, laser sources, optical spectroscopy, ultrafast laser science, non\-linear optics, and coherent beam control\. The Semiconductor Optics thrust focuses on materials characterization \(including, nano\-, meta\-, and optical materials\) and fabrication of semiconductor optical sensors for THz spectroscopy and other unique applications\. The Low Temperature Plasma physics thrust focuses on fundamental physics in dusty plasmas, pulsed plasmas, vacuum arcs, plasma / surface boundary problems, and broadens this knowledge for applications in microelectronics etch and plasma diagnostic development\.
