Our Student Affairs Department, has an outstanding opportunity for a Program Manager for Outdoor Wellness.
Program Management and student advising
Manage the day-to-day operation of the Outdoor program and gear shop
Co-manage the day-to-day operation of the Fitness Center front desk, inclusive of gear shop rentals
Collaborate with other departments to create inclusive programs that promote and celebrate diversity
Create a leadership/group initiatives curriculum and put it into action
Coordinate and collaborate with other departments to create a comprehensive series of social justice training programs and activities for students in the outdoors
Respond to the changing needs and values of UW Bothell's increasingly multicultural student population
Create programs that address the limitations recreation and wellness pose for historically underrepresented communities and work to dismantle barriers
Conduct needs assessments and research current trends in outdoor education and keeps Director apprised of what is found
Supervise, recruit, train, advise, and evaluate student staff
Recruit, hire, train and evaluate Outdoor staff, including gear shop and trip leaders
Conduct multi-day training for student employees
Develop, assess, and revise learning outcomes for student staff and the program under the direction of the Director of Recreation and Wellness
Administrative and operations management
Plan, schedule, and facilitate staff meetings
Develop policies, rules and regulations for Outdoor activities
Develop Outdoor schedules, which will include outdoor trips, educational workshops, and weekend events
Inventory control and maintenance of outdoor recreation gear
Serve on Division of Student Affairs and University related committees; and work cooperatively with colleagues on campus and at other institutions.
Risk management oversight for Outdoor program
Work with Director and Assistant Director to provide strategic risk management direction for other areas of Recreation & Wellness, inclusive of Intramurals, Fitness, and Health Promotion
Stay abreast of best practices and network with colleagues via professional associations.
Staff major events and programs, including campus events, for example, Convocation, Graduation, Student Housing, Move in, Orientation, etc.
Apply advising techniques and knowledge of the student development process in identifying support resources and services appropriate to student needs
Collect participation statistics and create reports quarterly
Assess program and compare to industry trends annually and keep Director apprised of what is found
Manage budget for Outdoor Programs
Oversee and approve payroll for student employees
Attend weekly one-on-one meetings with Director of Recreation & Wellness, weekly professional staff meetings and meet regularly with student staff
Other duties as assigned
Assist in the overall evaluation of the Department of Recreation & Wellness
Serve and participate on University committees as assigned
Perform additional duties as required
Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Student Affairs & Director of Recreation & Wellness.
Bachelor's degree in Student Development, Sport Management, Recreation, Athletic Administration, Education or related field of study.
At least two years' experience of outdoor program experience working with diverse populations
Have an understanding of outdoor recreation within the context of culture
Demonstrated record of leading outdoor experiences in a variety of activities, including but not limited to at least 3 of the following: backpacking, rock climbing, whitewater kayaking/canoeing, sea kayaking, mountain and/or road biking, indoor climbing, caving
Ability to function in a fast paced environment and adapt quickly to changing priorities
Strong conflict resolution and customer service skills
Work effectively in a multicultural environment
Current First Aid/CPR/AED certifications, or obtain within 6 months of hire
Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification, or obtain within 6 months of hire
Ability to think creatively to develop outdoor education opportunities
Strong attention to detail
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Master's Degree in Student Development, Sport Management, Recreation, Athletic Administration, Education or related field of study with 3-4 years of experience working directly with campus recreation, wellness and/or fitness
Member of a national organization such as NIRSA, NASPA, or ACPA
Current First Aid/CPR/AED instructor certification
WORKING CONDITIONS: A work schedule that fluctuates due to after-hours activities, meetings, and events is common. The Program Manager is expected to attend major student activities and events held on campus and in the local community. The Program Manager has regular and frequent contact with students, as well as frequent contact with faculty, staff, and administrators. Late night and weekend hours are part of the normal work week and frequent work from home is necessary in order to research new programs and attend to reports and requests for briefings. The position requires significant evening and weekend commitments throughout the year including some overnight trips.
