Reporting to the Director for Strategic Planning, the Communications Manager will assist with the creation, layout, design, and maintenance of materials associated with the newly created Office for Strategic Affairs. They also will be expected to work in multiple media formats including print, video, and emerging social media technologies. The individual will have a strong record of progressive experience in today's communications fields, which includes evidence of writing and editing, interpersonal skills, presentation skills, and marketing skills and proficiency in using technology, image processing, content management systems, and social media tools. The candidate of choice will have strong conceptual skills and will come ready to help Virginia Tech tell the compelling story of its plans for the future to those both inside and outside of the university (see the Beyond Boundaries vision document at http://www.beyondboundaries.vt.edu/about.html).The individual must have a strong understanding of effective visual communication design and branding principles; the use of the Internet as a medium of connection; and ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a dynamic environment. The individual will design and support engagement and outreach initiatives and events associated with the strategic plan and strategic initiatives. This position will work directly with the University Relations team and the Office for Inclusion and Diversity (www.inclusivevt.vt.edu). The position will work collaboratively with communication professionals based in units and colleges across the university to raise the visibility of strategic university initiatives. The individual will ensure that the communication, marketing, and engagement efforts are segmented by audience and include measures for success that inform future activity. The communications manager assures that efforts are aligned with Advancement initiatives, including university-wide communications, marketing and branding. Master's degree in communications, journalism or related field or a Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism or related field and significant experience and or training that may equate to an advanced degree.
Strong skills using technology in the workplace; familiarity with content management systems, web platforms, social media competencies
Strong writing and public presentation skills.
Demonstrated understanding of developing and emerging communications technologies and platforms.
Demonstrated ability to represent and incorporate diverse constituencies and perspectives in all forms of communication.
Demonstrated experience working with underrepresented populations and communities and communicating about issues of diversity and inclusion.
Ability to work collaboratively and as a member of multiple teams.
Experience working with a variety of creative communications, data analytics, e-mail management, and web content management software platforms.
Experience in a higher education environment.
Experience with strategic plans.
