Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist in Nutrient and Water Management (for Cropping Systems of NW Minnesota) in the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate and Northwest Research and Outreach Center 60% Research, 40% Extension

Appointment: 9-month tenure track faculty position in the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minnesota.
A position is available at the Northwest Research and Outreach Center (NWROC) located at Crookston, Minnesota. The successful candidate will develop a research and Extension program focused on applied nutrient management and water management in row crop systems of NW Minnesota. A strong Extension program will be developed that is directed to clientele groups and complements other state and regional Extension programs. A strong research program will be developed through external funding and collaborative and collegial partnerships within the region, nationally, and the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS).
The successful candidate will be expected to publish in peer-reviewed journals and generate external funding to build and support a program in applied research and graduate education. Potential areas of study include, but are not limited to, nitrogen and phosphorus management in row crop systems such as corn, soybean, and sugarbeet, and the interactions of that management on drainage water from surface or tile drainage.
Extension responsibilities will include delivery of innovative and relevant Extension education programs created or offered in collaboration with the Extension Crops Team, the Agricultural Drainage Team and the Nutrient Management Team as well as with members of other academic units located within the state and region. The successful candidate will communicate educational materials and results of applied research directly to diverse audiences by participating in planned educational programs and professional meetings. Engagement on a regular, informal basis with producers, agricultural professionals and industry personnel is expected.
The successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain a broad range of collaborative arrangements and interactions. Collaborative relationships with NWROC’s multi-disciplinary team of agricultural scientists are required. Strong working relationships with faculty and students in the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate will be essential for success. Graduate student advising in Land and Atmospheric Science or related program is also expected. Collaboration with colleagues in departments of related disciplines at the University of Minnesota, including other Research and Outreach Centers where appropriate, is expected. Interaction with Extension and research programs of neighboring universities and agencies is encouraged.
The Department of Soil, Water, and Climate is one of 12 academic departments within CFANS. Established in 1913 as the Division of Soils, its name was changed in 1954 to the Department of Soils. In 1956, it was renamed the Department of Soil Science. Then, in 1995, the name was again changed by the University to the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate. The current name reflects the expertise and areas where the department faculty and students are expected to make major contributions. There are currently 19 departmental faculty located on the St. Paul Campus and three located at Research and Outreach stations. The Department is also host to five USDA-ARS scientists. The mission of the Department is to advance the understanding of Earth system processes and the interactions among land, atmosphere, and water. The Department provides undergraduate and graduate teaching, conducts extensive research, and has significant extension outreach responsibilities. Because the soils, climate, and water resources vary greatly over the state, the departments’ activities are similarly widespread.
The Northwest Research and Outreach Center is located in northwest Minnesota near Crookston, Minnesota, in the heart of the northern Red River Valley. Northwest Minnesota is an intensive agricultural production area for sugarbeet, wheat, barley, oats, canola, corn, sunflower, soybeans, potato, dry edible beans and grass seed. Traditionally, Northwest Minnesota cropping systems have been primarily small grains and a variety of smaller acreages of row crops including half the sugarbeets grown in the Unites States. In recent years, much of the small grains acreage has been replaced with corn and soybean acres. The drainage of Northwest Minnesota is primarily surface drainage. But in recent years, significant acres have been tiled and more is being tiled every year. Surface waters in Northwest Minnesota flow north via the Red River of the North into Canada’s Lake Winnipeg creating an international focus on drainage water management. Established in 1895, NWROC’s long history of applied research and Extension/Outreach activities from both resident faculty and faculty from the St. Paul Campus has enhanced agricultural practices in the area. The research and educational programs of the NWROC focus on maintaining and improving economic viability of these agricultural commodities and associated enterprises through environmentally sound practices. NWROC currently houses five faculty members in the disciplines of Agronomy, Soil Science, Plant Pathology, Entomology, and Natural Resources with well-established university, regional, national, and international collaborations.

Qualifications: Minimum: Ph. D. (by appointment date) in soil science or related field with a solid background in nutrient management and water management in row crop systems, evidence of publication in refereed journals, and demonstrated ability to conduct field research.
Desired: Post-doctoral experience in nutrient management as related to crop production, drainage, and water quality; demonstrated experience in collaborative research, successful grant writing; experience in effective Extension programming and delivery. Experience working effectively in interdisciplinary teams and serving traditionally underrepresented and culturally diverse groups.
