POSITION: The Art Department at Appalachian State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art Education beginning August 2018.
DEPARTMENT: The Art Department is NASAD-accredited and has 40 full-time faculty members, more than 600 undergraduate majors and offers BFA degrees in Art Education, Graphic Design, and Studio Art, BS degrees in Commercial Photography and Graphic Arts and Imaging Technology, and a BA Degree in Art and Visual Culture with concentrations in Art History, Art Management and Studio Art. PROGRAM: Art Education at Appalachian State University enacts innovative approaches to art teacher preparation that uphold commitments to emergent curriculum, collaborative relationships, social justice, contemporary art practice, and the spirit of inquiry. The successful candidate will join our vibrant community with approximately 75-80 majors in the art education area. Students in our program achieve regional and national recognition for their research at both the National Art Education Association and the North Carolina Art Education Association annual meetings. Art Ed majors collaborate through community art projects with organizations such as the Smith Gallery, HOW Space, Watauga Public Library, Room 13, and area schools. QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Art Education, PK-12 teaching experience, and eligibility for North Carolina licensure in Art are required. Successful candidates will have university-level teaching experience, demonstrated excellence and creative approaches to teaching, demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures, and a promising scholarly trajectory in the field of art education.
RESPONSIBILITIES: This position encompasses teaching, research, and service activities that will support and grow the Art Education area. These activities include:
Teaching undergraduate Art Education studio-informed theory and practice courses.
Supervising students in field and internship placements.
Assisting with curriculum development, program planning, student recruitment, and advising.
Promoting cultural competence within the program, supporting/mentoring diverse populations, and contributing to campus diversity efforts.
Participating in service to the program, department, college, university, and profession.
Representing the Art Ed program within the Reich College of Education.
Collaborating with area schools, programs, and university faculty.
Presenting and publishing research in art education.
Contributing leadership in the field at regional, national, and/or international levels.
Additional opportunities for the candidate may include: leading the National Art Education Association student chapter, teaching Interdisciplinary, Honors, or First Year Seminar courses, conducting national and international student trips, initiating community arts programming through the HOW Space initiative or other community venues, and/or strengthening alumni relationships through professional learning programs.
