The Central Washington University Department of Music and College of Arts and Humanities invites applicants for the position of Associate Director of Bands/Assistant Professor of Music Education to begin September 2018. This position is a tenure-track appointment. The ideal candidate will be a passionate musician with a strong and effective commitment in music education and wind conducting who also demonstrates high potential for recruiting, building, and maintaining an outstanding program. We seek candidates with the demonstrated potential to contribute effectively to a faculty team dedicated to creating a positive, dynamic, and inclusive learning environment for an increasingly diverse student population.
Primary responsibilities include teaching the CWU Symphonic Winds and Music Education courses in the Department of Music. Duties will also include teaching undergraduate conducting, and other teaching responsibilities in areas of the successful candidate's experience.
- Serve as advisor of the CWU's 200-member National Association for Music Education Collegiate chapter. - Active participation in state, regional and/or national music education associations - Advise and mentor music education students - Place student teachers regionally - Develop and maintain relationships with local, state and regional music educators - Assist with conducting the CWU Symphonic Band and the 200-member CWU Marching Band - Assist the Director of Bands with administration of the university band program that includes 3 music major concert bands, marching band, pep band, and chamber ensembles. - Interface with the School of Education - Responsible for active recruitment and retention of undergraduate and graduate music majors for the Department of Music and University Band Program. - Serve on department, college and university committees as assigned.
Additional responsibilities include student advising, scholarly activity, participating in departmental program development and assessment, and professional service, including committee work.
Earned Master's degree in music.
Evidence of sustained excellence in teaching and conducting at the secondary level, including a minimum of 6 years of experience teaching music in the public schools .
Evidence of leadership in the music education field.
Experience working with a diverse student population and multicultural curriculum.
Evidence of sustained excellence in teaching and conducting at the secondary and collegiate level.
Current recognition at the regional or national level as demonstrated through peer-reviewed, merit-based performance invitations. (Examples include music educator conferences such as the National Association for Music Education, the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, the Music for All National Festival, College Band Directors National Association or other equivalent invitations.)
Experience teaching diverse curricular offerings in music education.
