This position will support instructional and disciplinary expertise in sustainability studies with a specialization in a social science such as anthropology, sociology, and/or environmental policy. This position will support transdisciplinary thought and contribute to the foundational support of our transdisciplinary approach to education. Teaching includes 21 course credits annually, consisting of a combination of social sciences, Environmental Citizen general education courses, and other classes as needed. Other duties include advising, professional development, scholarship, and college service. This person will support the sustainability science framework embedded in the Unity College Mission. Essential Functions include:
Deliver social science, sustainability, General Education, and other courses as assigned.
Knowledge and practice in student-focused experiential education practices.
Meet with students in an informal and formal advising capacity.
Engage in scholarly work.
Contribute to faculty service needs as assigned.
Serve on campus committees as appropriate given position responsibilities.
Contribute to the college's commitment to sustainability.
Contribute to the college's commitment to safety by using safe work habits, using ergonomics and proper lifting, and following biohazard protocol as appropriate.
Assume responsibility to maintain and upgrade professional knowledge and skills with regulations, industry trends, current practices, new developments, and applicable laws.
Follow the college's standards of conduct.
Demonstrate a high degree of commitment to customer service and quality education.
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in a social science field, environmental policy, or sustainability, with demonstrable experience in effective writing. Advanced ABD's will also be considered, but must have their degree in hand by July 2018. Must have strong oral and written communication skills, including facility with technical terminology appropriate to the position. Must have the ability to use word processing, spreadsheet and database programs. Ability to use the internet and email. Preferred qualifications include:
Knowledge of analysis techniques used in the social sciences such as research-based advocacy, stakeholder analysis, and design of survey and focus group research, among other relevant skills.
Additional skillset in a specialized training area (e.g., foreign language skills, composition and communication, GIS, and/or art history) are a plus.
Knowledge of experiential educational practices.
This position is for the Fall 2018-19 Academic Year; primarily works day shift with occasional evening hours as determined by course schedule. Physical demands of the position include regularly required to sit, use a computer, make phone calls, and lead outdoor activities. The employee must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Primarily works in an instructional lab or classroom environment. Must have a valid driver's license and good driving record.
