Job Description:The Assistant Director coordinates the academic orientation of new and existing students and supports the university's goals through developing and implementing a student-development approach to academic advising. The Assistant Director makes personal contact with students; provides a positive environment which assists students in their personal and academic growth and development; discusses with and assists students in selecting appropriate courses; provides initial guidance about proper procedures for the completion and processing of all necessary academic forms and use of electronic advising resources; refers students to appropriate university units, learning resources, and personnel; obtains and supplies students with supportive technical information; discusses class progress, goals, and utilization of learning resources, and holds regular meeting with students who are in academic difficulty. The Assistant Director maintains organized and current records documenting individual student progress. The Assistant Director is responsible for making sure all entering students are trained on DegreeWorks (or other ECU programs) that empower students to take ownership of their academic plans. The Assistant Director monitors students identified as academically at risk and participates in the development and implementation of the intervention programs that target students in academic difficulty. The Assistant Director participates in professional development opportunities and research conducted by the Office of Student Success and the COB. The Assistant Director evaluates the effectiveness of programs, courses, and advising materials, policies, and procedures. The Assistant Director participates in various student life activities and represents the College of Business on appropriate College and University committees. Each Assistant Director has leadership responsibility for selected College of Business programmatic initiatives. Examples of such programs include, but are not limited to, Taking Care of Business, the College of Business Leadership Conference, Honors programs, transition programs for transfer/non-traditional students, the Living Learning Community, specialized programs for students at-risk for academic difficulty, the Peer Mentor program, etc. Working as a team, the Assistant Directors create a yearly programming calendar for students and publicize these on current College of Business media outlets. In addition to advising and programmatic responsibilities, each Assistant Director is responsible for teaching two sections of COAD1000 for business students.
Miniumum Qualifications: The Assistant Director must possess a graduate degree (MBA, MA, MS, PhD, or EdD) in a closely related discipline (examples include, but are not limited to: counseling, adult education, educational leadership, business administration, public administration, psychology, or higher education administration) from an appropriately accredited institution. The Assistant Director must have a minimum of three (3) years experience in academic advising/counseling and program development in an institution of higher education. Strong interpersonal, analytical, organizational and customer-service skills are required.
