Community Associations Institute (CAI) is a 34,000-member, $12 million, educational and advocacy organization in Falls Church, VA. We are seeking a publications manager with 5+ years of experience, preferably in not-for-profit field. The publications manager will take the lead on building a new strategy to improve CAI’s Press and Publications unit. With more than 100 books, catalogs, brochures, and publications used by community associations leaders worldwide, the publications manager will oversee the conversion of CAI’s print content to electronic publishing resources. CAI is looking for a passionate publisher with sound editorial judgment and the ability to demonstrate exceptional personal communication and writing skills. Candidates with a strong proficiency in writing and editing for association newsletters, magazines, books, and email marketing are highly encouraged to apply.
Manage all aspects of CAI’s book publishing program, including:
Be responsible for the daily operations, materials, and inventory of CAI Press, which includes CAI books, journals, white papers, articles, and other publications and products.
Develop quality, marketable new products; decide which new product opportunities CAI will pursue; select writers and contributors from CAI’s volunteer leaders and other sources; decide which submissions will be published; write, rewrite, and edit submissions as needed; decide which resale products CAI will adopt; negotiate and manage resale relationships with commercial publishers.
Oversee the conversion of CAI’s print content to electronic publishing products from resource archives to producing the e-book formats.
Collaborate with marketing manager to develop promotional materials, including the bookstore catalog, monthly email promotions, house ads, web copy, videos, testimonials, and other marketing collateral as needed to promote CAI press and publications.
Serve as a CAI representative and manage the overall bookstore concept for CAI events and monitor sales for these events including Annual Conference, Law Seminar, and CEO-MC Retreat.
Determine viable levels of inventory, balance book/cash asset allocation, and deliver reports to VP on a quarterly schedule.
Assist VP of Communication & Marketing in developing CAI research while working closely with industry thought leaders to generate research topics.
Proofread CAI’s magazine and newsletters, articles and blogs on an as-needed basis.
Write and edit articles on a regular basis to CAI’s magazine and newsletters.
Develop and maintain editorial blog calendar and contribute editorial content for CAI’s Ungated blog.
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, related field or equivalent experience
Proficiency in writing and editing for newsletters, magazines, and/or books
Experience in all areas of email marketing software (Real Magnet, High Road Solution and Comm Partners)
Knowledge and strong skills in association publishing; budgeting, inventory management, manuscript acquisitions, author relations, and publishing industry standards
Experience with WordPress Blogs a plus
Experience with non-for-profit membership associations
Experience managing volunteer authors, contributors and other external relationships
Experience working with association leaders and chapters
Experience working with marketing, social media, and graphic design professionals
