The Mathematics Department at Central Washington University (CWU - Ellensburg, WA) invites applications for a nine-month tenure-track faculty position in Mathematics Education at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor beginning September 2018. CWU is a public, four-year university offering baccalaureate and master's degrees within its five colleges. The Mathematics Department, part of the College of the Sciences, is an active and vibrant department of nineteen tenure-track faculty and seven full-time non-tenure track instructors. Our largest major is mathematics education, followed by actuarial science, and a variety of degrees in mathematics or applied mathematics. The department enrolls approximately 1500 students each quarter with an average class size of 30-35 students. Mathematics education classes tend to be smaller with enrollments averaging 20-25 students. With an emphasis on academic distinction, excellent teaching, and student success, CWU has a longstanding reputation as being one of the premiere institutions in the Pacific Northwest for the preparation of highly trained middle level and secondary mathematics teachers.
Primary responsibilities of this position include teaching courses specifically designed for pre-service elementary, middle, and secondary teachers, as well as mathematics or statistics content courses. The successful candidate will be expected to possess superior teaching abilities, the potential for conducting scholarship and a desire to participate in department, university, and community service. Service responsibilities are likely to include advising prospective middle school and secondary teacher candidates and participating in mathematics education community service including K-12 outreach. The average teaching load is twelve credits per quarter.
Earned doctorate by September 14, 2018 in:
mathematics education with the equivalent of a master's degree in mathematics
mathematics with significant experience/education in K-12 teacher education, or
education with the equivalent of a master's degree in mathematics.
Background in mathematics education
Evidence of work with K-12 teachers and/or students related to mathematics teaching
A willingness to participate in K-12 outreach
Potential to develop an active research/scholarship program
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with colleagues in an interdisciplinary environment
Experience teaching mathematics in grades 4-12
Evidence of teaching excellence and commitment to undergraduate teaching
