The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist (EHSS) assists in coordinating the disposal of chemical, biological/medical, radioactive and universal waste from various academic and administrative departments. The EHSS collects data from various departments and coordinates the ongoing Chemical Inventory, Right-to-Know Survey, Title V Air Operating Permit, Storm Water Management, and Medical Waste Disposal compliance activities. The EHSS attends various meetings and prepares accurate reports of safety inspection activities, and establishes and maintains essential records and files. The EHSS assists EH&S staff with plan development, workplace safety compliance, laboratory safety compliance, site safety surveys, construction site visits, safety training, safety equipment upkeep, inventory, research, and data entry.
The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist is required to be on call or to work off hours as needed. As an Essential Service Employee, the incumbent is required, unless otherwise instructed by the supervisor or other employee designated by the University, to report to work when the campus is closed or is in a situation that requires a delayed opening or early closure.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintain all internal and regulatory reporting and ensure that all reports are timely, accurate, and complete.
Field verify that all environmental compliance requirements are being met for all applicable permits and that all permits are maintained in a current status.
Monitor completion dates of corrective action plans and provide follow-up with department managers and supervisors to ensure that corrective actions are implemented.
Regularly inspect and maintain the safety facilities in academic buildings, residence halls, construction sites, work sites, and laboratories; including emergency showers, eye wash stations, eye wash drench hoses, fume hoods, personal protective equipment, etc.
Schedule, provide access to, and/or develop and implement environmental and safety training and workshops for faculty, staff, and students. Assist with the management of all training activities of the Department.
Maintain accurate records of environmental, safety, and health training per NJDEP/USEPA/OSHA/PEOSH standard.
Coordinate event logistics, including room scheduling, and creation and duplicating of training materials.
Create and distribute training Certificates of Completion.
Assist in the development/updates of workplace safety and health programs, policies, and procedure manuals for students, faculty and staff.
Support University Facilities staff development and compliance through assisting with performing job hazard analyses, staffing plan review, and providing technical support.
Review and input MSU’s annual chemical inventory: collect chemical data from various academic and administrative departments; distribute MSDS/SDS and Fact Sheets; perform the data entry of chemical information into the NJ Department of Health Right-to-Know Program database, and maintain the Hazardous Materials Central File.
Coordinate and participate in the pick-up and disposal of hazardous chemical and radioactive wastes, Regulated Medical Waste, Universal waste, and E-waste from various academic and administrative departments.
Assist with maintaining the accuracy of the MSU EHS web pages.
Maintain EHS database information and accurate computer records for all Departmental work.
Maintain inventory and organize industrial hygiene equipment and other EH&S supplies.
Maintain knowledge of safety and environmental laws and regulations and any changes which impact the organization.
Complies with occupational safety and health standards and all rules, regulations and orders. Participates in occupational health and safety training, and promotes safe work practices through the selection of footwear appropriate for the work environment, and the utilization of personal protective equipment, when necessary.
Participate in meetings related to Department and/or Division operations.
Perform additional duties as assigned.

A Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health, Safety, or Engineering; Science (Chemistry, Biology, or Environmental); Industrial Hygiene; Occupational Safety & Health; or other similar field is required. Progress demonstrated towards obtaining a professional certification (ASP/CSP/CHMM/CIH/PE, etc.) is strongly desired. Working knowledge of OSHA, PEOSH, and EPA regulations is strongly preferred. Working knowledge of Laboratory functions, State and Local environmental regulations, and Hazardous Materials Management is also preferred.
At least two (2) years of practical and theoretical experience in developing and/or monitoring environmental protection, health, and safety programs, including training of personnel, are required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Proficiency with the MS Office Suite and working knowledge of safety databases is required.
Must be able to walk, sit, stand, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects up to 10 lbs, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
Must be able to hear or listen in the normal range (corrected) and speak and give directions clearly.
Must be able to perform critical sensory requirements including general vision. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
Must be able to work with chemicals and be able to perform regular inspections associated with environmental regulations.
Must possess and maintain a valid New Jersey Driver’s License in order to drive University vehicles.
