The Histotechnologist/Histotechnician prepares histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by the Pathologist.
Accessioning and grossing (If applicable) of specimens.
Prepares sections of human tissue for examination. Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by Pathologist. Appropriately stains slides; stains and labels specimens.
Performs special stains and immunohistochemistry procedures.
Responsible for preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment and laboratory computers. Monitor laboratory/pathology charges; maintain policy and procedures manual. Orders and maintains lab and office supplies.
Keeps accurate records including but not limited to: equipment preventative maintenance and repair, QA and QC records, temperature and equipment charts, safety procedures, training, exposure and waste management.
Prepares slides of specimens to enhance visibility under microscope. Examines slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements. Studies slides under microscope to detect deviations from expected results and reports abnormalities for further study.
Responsible for keeping work area clean, neat and organized. Completes thorough cleaning at the end of work day.
Prepares chemicals and stains for performing tests. Uses all chemicals following safety procedures. Maintains accurate and adequate inventory of reagents and supplies. Tracks utilization and expiration dates.
Understands and follows all laboratory accreditation standards; CAP, OSHA, EPA, and CLIA standards. Maintains educational credits and other requirements for licensure.
Associate’s Degree and/or equivalent from two (2) year college or technical school.
ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) Certification preferred, but licensure not required.
Six (6) months to one (1) year of related experience and/or training.
Knowledge of computer software programs (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel).
Ability to prioritize work flows/processes to meet time constraints and must be flexible to constantly changing schedule.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees throughout the practice with respect and dignity regardless of level of position, disability, cultural or language barriers. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Participates in continuing education programs and staff meetings as well as risk management and quality assurance activities.
Excellent verbal, communication and organizational skills.
