This is a full time, contract position with an end date of December 31, 2018.The UC Davis Environmental Health Sciences Center (EHSC) is an NIEHS-funded program directed by Dr. Irva Hertz-Picciotto in the Department of Public Health Sciences. The Center is one of 20 NIEHS Core Centers across the country and includes several program components with the overarching goal of growing the field of environmental health sciences research, and a focus on addressing the many environmental health issues facing residents in the Central and San Joaquin Valleys of California. The Science and Policy Writer will, with input from Center leadership, independently develop a wide variety of content, including feature articles, commentary and opinion pieces, policy papers, brochures and fact sheets, website and social media content. Target audiences include community stakeholders (state agencies, community-based organizations and advocates), researchers, and policy-makers. In collaboration with Center researchers, the candidate will translate complex scientific concepts and findings, in a context of broader topics in environmental health sciences and public health to create cogent and engaging articles covering a wide range of topics (e.g. pollution, human health and disease, technology, and environmental justice). Under the direction of the Center Program Administrator, the Science and Policy Writer will serve as the Center's liaison to institutional and federal sponsor public affairs/communications offices in the development of press releases and other media communications. The Science and Policy Writer will also select, supervise, and mentor EHSC student interns from the University Writing Program.REQUIRED--Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism or a related field, plus two years of experience in professional or journalistic writing in one of the following fields: environmental science, environmental health, environmental justice, environmental policy, environmental and resource economics, biological sciences, or public health, with extensive knowledge of various English language style manuals such as APA, MLA, etc. --Demonstrated experience creating a high volume of web and social media content.--Technical ability to learn and navigate content management applications (e.g. Wordpress), online journals, bibliographic databases, citation management software (e.g. EndNote). --Demonstrated experience writing for a policy or advocacy audience. --Excellent proofreading skills. --Outstanding written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, active listening skills and political acumen.--Outstanding organizational skills and demonstrated ability to prioritize and coordinate several projects simultaneously while maintaining strict attention to detail.PREFERRED--Master's degree in communications, journalism, or related field.--Skill and experience using graphic design software such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop or other desktop publishing applications to create brochures, flyers, posters or other materials.--Experience writing for an academic audience or contributing to academic publications--Experience supervising and mentoring junior writers--Bilingual English/SpanishSPECIAL REQUIREMENT - THIS POSITION MAY BE SUBJECT TO A CRIMINAL BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, DRUG SCREEN, LIVE SCAN FINGERPRINTING, MEDICAL EVALUATION CLEARANCE, AND FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY ASSESSMENT
