Advertised Summary Job Description: Reporting to the Senior Director for Entrepreneurship, OAD, the Assistant Director of the Columbia Startup Lab (AD-CSL) will assist the Columbia Entrepreneurship (CE) leadership team in the operation and management of the Columbia Startup Lab (CSL). The AD-CSL will be responsible for the execution of the programmatic and community aspects of CSL a 5,100 sq.ft., co-working facility located at the WeWork SoHo West building. The CSL provides programming, community, and working space for more than 70 recently-graduated Columbia entrepreneurs who now call the CSL their "corporate headquarters."
The CSL is the result of a unique partnership between CE, Columbia College, and the Columbia schools of Business, Engineering, Law, Public Health, and International and Public Affairs. Under the supervision of CE, the AD-CSL will also work in close coordination with these partner schools.
The AD-CSL will focus primarily on building community within the cohort of resident ventures and on being a trusted conduit between the CSL cohort and the partner schools, the University, and the NYC startup ecosystem. CE and the partner schools will need to rely on the AD-CSL for the early identification of resources needed by individual startups in the cohort and on identifying opportunities for CE and the partner schools to be helpful to the interests of the startups at CSL.
The AD-CSL should also expect to receive a myriad array of special projects and related duties to meet new requirements and take advantage of new opportunities.
Because so much of CE's work is done in collaboration with other organizations, exemplary relationship management is a requirement. Because CE is a lean organization, independent program ownership is critical to the success of the AD-CSL position and indeed to the whole CSL initiative. The ideal candidate will need to have a proven "can-do" and entrepreneurial spirit.
Specifically, the AD-SCL will: - Help coordinate the five-school administrative group as she/he assists with the programming and administration of the Columbia Startup Lab - Help build a cohesive sense of community within the cohort, fostering a welcoming environment, and presenting an enthusiastic, positive, and helpful attitude - Help to measure and monitor the vitality and viability of the individual startups within CSL - Organize a variety of CSL events, including but not limited to office hours, lunch-and-learn sessions, and seminars. These events will include hosting visits from Columbia alumni, CSL stakeholders, and collaboration partners - Manage the yearly application process in coordination with the partner schools - Actively solicit, track, and triage feedback from resident ventures, escalating potential problems and opportunities as they arise - Collect, analyze, and use important metrics about the individual startups and the whole cohort - Manage the CSL Working Group comprised of representatives of the CSL partner schools
General Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and its equivalent, including a minimum of three (3) years' related experience in an entrepreneurship ecosystem and/or in university-based program management is required. Strong proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications including Access, Excel, MSWord, and PowerPoint is necessary. Some nights and weekends are required.
Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications: Demonstrated excellence and experience in a variety of competencies including Lean Launch, Design Thinking, early-stage venture building, team coordination, analytical thinking, and customer service.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work with changing priorities across multiple projects with multiple groups. The AD-CSL must demonstrate the ability to lead, manage small project-based budgets, and plan and execution of events. The AD-CSL must have excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including a high level of attention to detail. Must be able to independently problem-solve and troubleshoot and know when to escalate issues when necessary. In addition to the ability to work independently in a dynamic team environment, the AD-CSL must demonstrate the ability to effectively partner with a diverse group of administrators and academic leaders.
The successful candidate will have a passion for entrepreneurship as well as excellent customer service.
Superior written and verbal communication skills are required, as is the ability to interact with a highly diverse group of constituents within and outside the University and entrepreneurship community, utilizing savvy, tact, and discretion. A high level of energy, initiative, and creativity is essential.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience working in a higher educational institution or similar not-for-profit organization is preferred.
