About the Position UW-IT's Academic Experience Design and Delivery (AXDD) ) unit strives to understand the needs and goals of UW students, instructors, staff, and researchers in order to guide the development and effective use of new technology.

The Research Scientist/Engineer will be a member of AXDD's Assessment team. The Assessment team stays informed about current research in teaching, learning, and technology, and conducts original studies on users' needs, current practices, and broad trends in regard to technology use and adoption. In addition, the Assessment team supports data-driven decisions and organizational strategy with meaningful analytics and innovative statistical approaches designed to improve our services to the UW. We communicate findings to multiple audiences to support strategic decision-making, the use of best practices, and the development/adoption of appropriate, effective technology.
AXDD seeks a Research Scientist (RS) to join the Assessment team and contribute to the planning, implementation, and management of multiple research and development projects in support of these goals.

Contribute to development of learning analytics to understand student engagement and support student success and retention Design targeted studies to gather data that inform the selection, design, and development of online applications used for teaching, learning, and research at the UW Analyze data, develop findings, and communicate findings to variety of constituencies Develop innovative and meaningful visualizations of data Identify trends, and support strategic, data-driven decision-making Work with user experience designers and application engineers to ensure that software development and selection is informed by user needs and findings in educational technology Present findings at professional conferences and participate in national and international research communities
Education: Bachelor's degree in Education, Information Science, Human Computer Interaction, Psychology, Anthropology, or any related field.
Minimum of 1 to 3 years experience in the following: Expert written and oral communication skills and collaboration skills Proven expertise in all aspects of the research process, including reviewing literature, designing studies, collecting and analyzing data using a variety of methods, and reporting and presenting findings Expertise in analyzing quantitative data and expert knowledge of statistics Experience with data analysis planning, demonstrated skill in making sense of data, and familiarity with data analysis tools and software
Demonstrated experience with research related to education and technology Experience with data visualization, and facility with visualization tools and software (Tableau, Splunk) The ability to rapidly prototype apps using your preferred coding language Experience writing simple SQL queries Experience applying research skills to aid the software development processes, by conducting needs assessments, gathering requirements, and identifying user goals and workflows Active participation in the national/international higher education technology community Experience in project management/managing project teams Familiarity with UW systems, policies, and academic programs.
