FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENTThe Department of Mathematics at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) in the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for four tenure-track Assistant/Associate/Full Professor or Instructor positions starting in Fall 2018.ABOUT THE COLLEGEBMCC is an integral part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system with the largest enrollment of any campus with over 27,000 students. It is strategically located in downtown Manhattan in close proximity to the artistic communities of Tribeca and SoHo, the dynamic downtown financial district, and is at the center of one of the most exciting cities in the world.ABOUT THE DEPARTMENTThe Mathematics Department is undergoing a process of major growth and would like to attract new faculty that will contribute to this process through teaching, research, and service. We currently have approximately 75 full time faculty and 200 adjunct faculty. We are primarily a service department but have a growing number of mathematics majors. We offer a full range of courses from developmental mathematics through advanced calculus. In addition to traditional courses for STEM majors, we offer a variety of courses for non-STEM majors (including an alternative pathway to the traditional algebra sequence). We also offer accelerated courses that combine developmental mathematics with credit bearing mathematics courses as well as a significant number of online and hybrid courses. There is extensive support available for research and pedagogical innovation. All new tenure track professorial faculty receive a significant amount of reassigned time to be used exclusively for research.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESBoth the college and the Department of Mathematics hold teaching as the first priority for faculty, and we seek candidates passionate about using innovative pedagogy in the classroom. Faculty are expected to be able to teach the full range of mathematics courses described above and may sometimes be asked to teach evenings or weekends. An ideal candidate would have an established research agenda (in Mathematics or Mathematics Education) and be able to take advantage of the extensive academic resources available within the New York City area, including the City University of New York. Scholarly activity, including publications in peer reviewed journals, is required for both tenure and promotion, as are service to the department and the college. Faculty are also encouraged to be active in professional organizations and apply for externally funded grants.QUALIFICATIONSFor Assistant, Associate or Full Professor: A doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in Mathematics or Mathematics Education as well as significant college teaching experience.For Instructor: A master's degree in Mathematics or Mathematics Education, as well as significant college teaching experience. Candidates must be actively enrolled in a doctoral program and have completed all requirements for the doctoral degree except the dissertation.Preferred Qualifications:An established research agenda (for professorial candidates)Experience using instructional technology in the mathematics classroomExperience mentoring undergraduate student researchExperience teaching non-traditional community college students, including adult learners.Persons appointed in the instructor title are only eligible for five (5) annual appointments.
