PhD in biological, physical, engineering or computational sciences with significant programming experience.
Hands on experience in developing and carrying out data analytical strategies and pipelines in the context of genomics or breeding.
Experience in handling and analyzing large data sets from high-throughput platforms.
Experience/general proficiency with use of web services, relevant programmatic languages (e.g., perl, python, java) and statistical languages (e.g. R, SAS, MATLAB)
Must be able to understand and translate life scientist researchers’ scientific goals into analytical strategies and process requirements.
Must be able to function as part of an interactive team while demonstrating self-initiative to achieve project’s goals and group’s mission.
Excellent oral and written English communication and inter-personal skills
Research background in genomics, genetics, molecular biology, computational biology or breeding
Research background in plant systems strongly preferred
Critical and independent thinking
Strong general computational and programming skills (Perl, Python, Java, C/C++), database programming skills (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle) and competence with UNIX shell environment.
Data modeling skills are highly desirable.
Research Planning (20%)
Help design, plan, implement and evaluate novel technological approaches to GEMSTools and other analytical toolkit components, not least to ensure optimal interoperability among the various analytical tools being developed as part of GEMSToolsTM
Contribute to short and long range adoption and adaptation of existing third-party technologies that are designed to become part of the GEMSToolsTM analytical platform
Contribute to project formulation and drafting of project proposal
Work collaboratively with breeders and life sciences researchers both on and off campus to accelerate their research objectives by proposing novel computational solutions
Work both independently and in large, international, multidisciplinary groups, depending on the project and context
Data Mining and Modelling (50%)
Help develop analytic toolkits for GEMSToolsTM that mine associations in Genetic x Environment x Management x Socioeconomic data sets
Develop analytical toolkits to (semi-)automate the cleaning of field trial and pedigree databases for soybean and other crops
Interact with G.E.M.STM partners to access, troubleshoot and analyze data using a blend of novel and third-party tools related to database management, cleanup and analysis
Analysis and Manuscript Writing (15%)
Develop technical documentation and prepare professional manuscripts related to the GEMSToolsTM analytical toolkit development
