The innovative University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) invites applications for a faculty position (open rank) with expertise in undergraduate mathematics education. This faculty member will work collaboratively and creatively with an established faculty team on the ongoing design of innovative, rigorous mathematics curricula focused on health sciences relevancy and quantitative literacy for undergraduates. Teaching and learning strategies are expected to be innovative as well, with engaging, experiential, and integrated approaches generating strong success for all students, including those from underrepresented groups (students of color, first generation, and Pell-eligible). Scholarly inquiry into the efficacy of new approaches to undergraduate mathematics instruction is expected to inform practice.
The University of Minnesota designated the University of Minnesota Rochester as its fifth System campus in December 2006. UMR admitted its first class of undergraduates in fall 2009, offering both the Bachelor of Science in Health Professions (BSHP) and the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS). The BSHP is a collaborative program with the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences (MCSHS). With four graduating classes, UMR’s innovative approach to active, collaborative, interdisciplinary learning is supporting success for graduates who either continue their education in a broad range of health sciences (BSHS) or enter multiple health professions (BSHP). About the UMR Center for Learning Innovation
This new faculty member will join colleagues in the Center for Learning Innovation (CLI), an interdisciplinary department that focuses on undergraduate education in health sciences and engages students as participants in research on learning. The CLI is a learning-centered faculty community in which ongoing assessment guides student learning and is the basis for research on teaching and learning. Faculty take a team-based, collaborative approach to teaching and research. While some engage in the scholarship of teaching and learning across the integrated curriculum, others approach their research from a disciplinary education perspective. The CLI promotes a learner-centered, technology-enhanced, concept-driven, and community-integrated learning environment. Through ongoing 8/17 assessment of student achievement, the CLI aspires to personalize education and continuously improve the educational experience for our students.
The successful candidate has a PhD or EdD in mathematics education or a PhD in mathematics with a deep interest in continuing to develop established expertise in innovative, undergraduate teaching and learning as well as pursuing a related education research agenda in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment. Experienced scholar-teachers are encouraged to apply.
