UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight and direction of the UW's IT infrastructure, resources and services. The UW IT Research Computing group exists in recognition that research is a central constituent and core activity of the university that is strongly dependent upon computational practices and data science. The mission of Research Computing is to accelerate research via consultation and education: Engaging with research groups across schools, departments, programs, affiliates and campuses, and across a broad array of disciplines from medicine to business to astronomy to environmental science.
UW-IT has an outstanding opportunity for a Lead Cloud Developer.
This Lead Cloud Developer position is intended to provide a deep technical consulting resource for tools, methods, technologies, architectures and best practices that streamline data science with particular emphasis on cloud computing. This consulting service is provided to faculty, staff, students and affiliates across the UW Seattle, Tacoma and Bothell campuses. The position also carries responsibilities to represent the University of Washington as a leader in the broad academic and industrial research community. Consulting activities include office hours, email support, extended project participation through eScience Institute incubators, and funded project participation under research grants. This work will be augmented by extensive documentation so that captured solutions can be read, understood and adopted by other researchers and programs, addressing the social scaling challenge of similar solvable obstacles faced by independent research teams numbering in the tens of thousands globally.
The Lead Cloud Developer duties will include educating the research community in safe and optimal use of cloud computing technologies through seminars, courses and within larger events such as hackathons. This responsibility will require a solid working familiarity with three technology stacks (AWS, Azure, GCP). It will also require learning and understanding research projects in substantial technical depth across multiple scientific domains represented at UW.
BA degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related field or experience
Experience in computational research including research software development and peer review publication; project coordination across multiple institutions and groups
Experience developing and teaching curriculum material for research computing including cloud
Familiarity with implementing Web Frameworks (e.g. Django, Flask, Bottle, Jekyll)
Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g. D3, Leaflet, Matplotlib,
Familiarity with public cloud technologies across Google, Microsoft and AWS platforms including access via command line, Application Programming Interface and browser consoles
Familiarity with design and implementation of databases and open-source systems for research and data management (e.g. MySQL, PostgreSQL, GeoServer, THREDDS server)
Familiarity with cloud project management and software development principles (e.g. Agile, Test-Driven)
Familiarity with software management environments such as GitHub
Experience instantiating and working with collaborative sandbox environments such as Jupyter Notebooks
Ability to plan and execute a technical agenda in support of a data-driven scientific research program
Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.
Experience promoting cloud adoption in research cross-spectrum: data security, cost evaluation, high performance computing, web application development, database implementation, service selection.
