We are seeking a student services professional with a strong ability to work collaboratively within a diverse community and with a wide range of people.
Reporting to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Queer Student Resources, the Assistant Director (AD) will be responsible for working collaboratively with the Director to plan and implement all facets of the center as it pertains to the mission. The AD is expected to administer, implement, and interpret university and department policies and procedures; and to identify, clarify, and resolve highly visible or complex issues with substantial significance and impact that may span multiple areas, using expert technical and professional knowledge requiring independent judgment. The AD will also be responsible for supervision of student staff, general campus programming, and outreach; representation at division-wide and campus-wide meetings; and will coordinate all financial and administrative functions of Queer Student Resources. The AD will assist in the development and implementation of policies and practices that foster greater university-wide appreciation for the educational, social, cultural, and policy needs identified by queer students, faculty and staff at Stanford.
Administer an area or program in student services:
Manage social networks and QSR website including up to date resources, and fellowship & scholarship opportunities and events
Manage facility needs associated with QSR space on campus (QSpot)
Support Sharing Our Stories at Stanford program by the SOSAS student team
Support student/staff/faculty initiatives with the help of the QuEST (Queer Events and Services at Stanford) team
Engage in critical analysis of student and program concerns to resolve substantial issues which may span multiple areas, using advanced professional knowledge.
Provide guidance and counsel, oversee and develop a wide range of programs and services, analyze effectiveness and make recommendations for future programs.
Direct House-Management staff (QSpot Manager and Online Coordinator) to maintain a welcoming and inclusive space, providing access to registered students 24/7, as well as an updated calendar of events
Mentor and support queer voluntary student organizations
Provide consulting advice to inter-departmental organizations; represent Queer Student Resources at meetings and conferences, and the university to external constituents.
Develop and implement plans for outreach efforts, develop and maintain external community and university liaison represent department and university at meetings and events.
Support Queer Campus' outreach efforts across campus of queer resources (rainbow and trans awareness flags, stickers, brochures, etc.) with the help of the Queer Campus student tea
Provide direct advice to students on a range of issues including, but not limited to, sexual and gender identity, transitioning and coming out, creating community, intersectionality, family issues, academic progress, academic program policies, career plans, accessibility, community standards, etc., in order to assist them in making appropriate choices and decisions.
May oversee, analyze and assist in financial processes and development of budgets.
Manage financial processes and development of budgets using Stanford systems
May train and supervise other staff, volunteers and temporary workers.
Manage hiring of student staff, training, scheduling, duties, check-ins, teamwork.
Other duties may also be assigned
Education & Experience:
A Bachelor's degree and 3 years of relevant experience, or combination of equivalent work & educational experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and management.
Advanced analysis and problem solving skills.
Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite, accounting systems, google docs and managing social media and websites.
Advanced customer service skills.
Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
Understanding of financial transactions.
Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
Master's degree in a related field preferred. Related fields include: student affairs, higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, psychology, feminist/queer studies, or gender studies.
Creativity, resourcefulness, initiative, and a high degree of motivation is required
Ability and willingness to learn and use Stanford financial systems is essential.
Knowledge of challenges faced by undergraduate & graduate students in a highly selective residential institution & ability to assist students navigating environment.
Understanding and knowledge of queer and gender theory, critical race theory and other identity-based theoretical frameworks and social justice approaches in an interdisciplinary context.
Understanding of social justice work & identity-based centers on college campus
Willingness to take on new challenges in a dynamic and changing environment
Ability to work w/ individuals & groups from many identities & backgrounds
Ability to work some evenings and weekends
Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and rarely pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
Occasionally drive students to staff retreats, purchase items for meetings, events, and retreats, and move furniture around for events.
