Histologic Technician II - Anatomic Pathology Laboratory
Full-time - 40 hours - 1st shift - start time varies. Saturday work also varies.
Acts as a team leader when delegated the responsibility. Prepares slides of tissue specimens to include special stains and enzyme histochemistry for microscopic evaluation by the Pathologist in compliance with section policies and procedures

Assures accurate and timely accessioning, labeling and billing of specimens, according to departmental practices. Accessions and labels specimens correctly. Bills charges correctly. Processes information in Anatomic Pathology computer system correctly.
Assures accurate and timely processing and staining of specimens, according to departmental practices. Ensures accurate and efficient performance of laboratory procedures. Processes tissue specimens and prepares microscopic slides for diagnostic evaluation by Pathologists. Follows QC procedure and evaluates accurately.
Provides maximum care in identification procedures when processing patient specimens. Assists in grossing of patient tissue specimens. Maintains correct and complete patient identification at all times.
Performs special stains and/or enzyme histochemical stains. Performs special stains and/or enzyme histochemical stains independently. Evaluates accuracy and quality of special stains.
Performs additional Anatomic Pathology Department laboratory procedures. Performs assigned tasks in other Anatomic Pathology laboratory areas such as Cytology and Molecular Diagnostics.
Improves work skills through self- study and continuing education. Information from written documents/communications are reviewed, retained and appropriately applied. Manuals and procedure bulletins are used as reference/learning tools. Available educational opportunities/materials are utilized to enhance professional development. In-house continuing education programs are attended. Minimum of 4 hours continuing education/year required outside of annual in-service requirements. Maintain current certification.
Contributes to the smooth and efficient operation of the section and department. Contributes to teamwork and overall section productivity. Demonstrates the ability to handle multiple tasks at one time. Covers assigned work area; answering the phone, covering breaks, etc. Answers the phone and follows through on all requests appropriately. Aids in training and orientation of less experienced employees, students and others as delegated. Performs work without allowing personal situation/perspectives to compromise lab operations. Adjusts schedule to meet changes in workload or at the direction of the manager. Schedules appointments on days off when possible.
Protects self, coworkers and facility by following approved policies and procedures to prevent the spread of bloodborne and/or airborne diseases. Uses engineering controls, work practice controls and appropriate personal protective equipment as indicated in the section task list.
Exhibits and promotes the professional image of laboratories in accordance with hospital, department, and professional society philosophies, goals and standards of laboratory testing. Presents a professional image in all aspects of the job. Is courteous, helpful and aware of the customers in all situations and works to satisfy their needs. Exhibits the hospital key values and standards of laboratory testing.
Must be knowledgeable and proficient in all areas of the histology lab to include special stains and enzyme histochemistry.
Position requires working first, and/or second shift and limited weekend hours. Flexibility in scheduling required.
Associates Degree in and applied science or high school graduate with two years training as defined by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the National Society of Histotechnology.
Three years’ experience in a clinical histology lab preferred
