Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) invites applications for the tenure-line position of Field Station Director within the Department of Biological Sciences to begin Fall Semester, 2018. This search is taking place during an exciting time of rapid growth for the department, and the successful candidate will play a major role in further growth of the program in accordance with Missouri S&T's Strategic Plan ( http://strategicplan.mst.edu/ ). Candidates must have a Ph.D., a strong publication record, and an active, externally funded research program in an area related to field biology. Appointment of the position can be at associate or full professor, depending on experience.
This founding field station director will take the lead in the development of a newly established field station, located 30 minutes from campus. The program has recently been awarded an NSF planning grant, and is an OBFS institutional member. There are several habitats in the area around the field station, including aquatic systems (ponds, wetlands, and streams), terrestrial systems (forests, old fields, glades), and more unique systems (karst areas and caves). Candidates can be active researchers on animals, plants, or microbes, and examine their study organisms at a variety of scales, from population genetics to ecosystem ecology. In addition to being director of the field station, the candidate will teach classes both on campus and at the field station and advise graduate (M.S.) and undergraduate students in research. The director will also collaborate with researchers and instructors from other departments, including geology, chemistry, environmental engineering, social science, and humanities.
Missouri S&T, one of four campuses comprising the University of Missouri, enrolls approximately 6,800 undergraduates and 2,000 graduate students and is among the top technological research universities in the country. Its 284-acre campus, about 90 minutes from the city of St. Louis, is situated amid the scenic Missouri Ozarks. The Department of Biological Sciences offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in Biology and an M.S. degree in Applied and Environmental Biology. Biology faculty and students are affiliated with several campus interdisciplinary research and education centers and have funding from NSF, NIH, NASA, US Forest Service, Missouri Research Board, and Missouri Department of Higher Education.
