The University of Maryland, Baltimore School ofMedicine has a Veterinary Research position available for theDepartment of Radiation Oncology. This veterinary research position will beresponsible for providing clinical care and treatment oflaboratory animals in preclinical studies. Work is performed in accordance withdepartment Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), animal welfare regulations,the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Public Health Services(PHS), Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), Association for Assessmentand Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), Institutional Animal Careand Use Committee (IACUC) guidelines, and/or United States Food and DrugAdministration (USFDA) 21CFR58 Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations.
Interested candidates may be considered for either the Veterinary Research Assistant or the Veterinary Research Specialist provided that meet the minimum requirements for the position.
Perform or assist with specialized veterinary proceduressuch as physical examinations, treatments, surgery, intubation and anesthesiamonitoring, euthanasia, and radiology/radiation delivery.
Administer or assist in the administration of a healthmonitoring program including diagnostics.
Assist in ensuring that post-operative care isperformed as appropriate.
Perform technical services for rodents (mice, rats),swine (minipigs, farm pigs), rabbits, and/or ferrets, as well as other species.
Perform or assist with maintenance of animal healthrecords, requisitions, USDA receipts and dispositions.
Perform or assist in the training of animal care andresearch personnel.
Perform routine laboratory maintenance andresearch activities per established department SOPs, study/IACUC protocols, andin compliance with GLP regulations. Activities may include but are not limitedto: general housekeeping, daily observations of animal health, collection ofcultures and biological specimens, administration of pharmaceuticals andnutrients, including anesthesia, and performing euthanasia.
Perform some advanced laboratory researchactivities per established department SOPs, study/IACUC protocols, and incompliance with GLP regulations. Activities may include but are not limited to:serum chemistry white blood cell differentials; preparing cell samples for flowcytometry analysis and operation of flow cytometry; performing cell separationsby density gradients; obtaining blood, bone marrow, and tissue samples;performing animal surgery and providing post-operative care.
Maintain detailed, accurate, and legiblerecords for all animal procedures performed and instrumentation employed tocomply with the Guidelines of Good Laboratory Practice.
Perform literature research, editing andpreparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics forpublication.
Perform administrative duties such as:assisting in developing policies, studies, procedures and/or methods forlaboratory experimentation; and ordering supplies.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education: Graduation from a two year AmericanVeterinary Medical Association Accredited Veterinary Technician program.
Experience: Two (2) years of relevant experience preferablyin a veterinary practice or research environment. To qualify for the Specialist, candidates must have a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience.
Licensure/Certification: Registered as a Veterinary Technician inthe state of Maryland is preferred. AdditionalAmerican Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certifications arepreferred.
Preferred: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field ispreferred. Previousexperience handling swine and/or rabbits is preferred. Previousexperience working in preclinical toxicology in a regulated environment (GLP)is preferred.
Conditions ofEmployment: Candidates selected for employmentmay be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determineability to perform the job. May be required to have current tetanus and/ordiphtheria shots.
Mayrequire training related to occupational safety and health, environmentalcompliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.
Except for qualifications established by law,additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained theknowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work ofthe job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement ona year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year ofexperience.
Knowledge,Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of appropriate handling of allspecies of laboratory animals position requirements. Ability to understand andutilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both oral and writtencommunications. Skill in animal husbandry care and handling with variety ofspecies, including rodents. Ability to perform position in compliance with allrequirements, regulations, and laws. Ability to maintain high standards withthe work being performed and maintain awareness with trends and influences. Assumespersonal responsibility for all outcomes; makes effective and timely decisions;and learns how to effectively use technology. Skill in statisticalinterpretation and data analysis using statistical software as well asspreadsheet and database software applications. Ability to use measurable andverifiable information for making decisions or judgments.
Ability to effectively communicate bothverbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Interprets and understandswritten information and is able to listen attentively to verbal and non-verbalcues that lead to a deeper understanding. Ability to network with, and provideinformation to key groups and individuals.
Ability to work cooperatively withothers and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteousbehavior when interacting with others. Capable of interacting pleasantly andpositively with other to meet customer expectations, and provide follow up withcustomers.
