The Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington is a nationally ranked education and research program. Located on the main Seattle campus of the University of Washington, UW EE currently supports greater than 750 undergraduate and graduate students and over 50 active research faculty. EE's annual expenditures reach approximately $19 million and external funding is close to $25 million. The Department has several key areas of research: data sciences, biosystems, computing and networking, photonics and nano devices, power and energy systems and robotics and controls. The Department of Electrical Engineering currently has a part time (50% FTE) opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineering 3 position within the CMMB Vision -UWEE Center on Satellite Multimedia and Connected Vehicles.
This is a new, leading research center dedicated to advancement of satellite networking, multimedia, smart connected vehicles and artificial intelligence/machine learning technologies.
The primary function for this position will be to drive definition and finalization of a converged satellite-cellular network architecture for broadcasting to mobile terrestrial users. Users receive content on their mobile device either directly via a dual satellite network or via streaming from a server within the cellular network. As part of this, the successful candidate will develop mathematical models suitable for analysis and simulation studies for dual-satellite downlink land-mobile channel, for a variety of canonical scenarios and conduct link level analysis to determine rate-range trade-offs. Of specific interest is performance evaluation of new transmission schemes using i. separate and ii. same bands over the satellites with inter-satellite coding and performance benchmarking against current state-of- art digital direct satellite systems for mobile multimedia.
Further extensions to this architecture to be explored involves inclusion of direct device-to- device communications and evaluation of suitable coded caching schemes. Finally, the candidate will also lead development of network simulation models (using network simulator ns-3) for estimating network coverage and throughput for various satellite constellations.
Expected activities include: i. Weekly meetings with Center Executive Director and other research personnel, conduct research and design reviews; manage project schedules ii. Organize reports/notes, code repository and associated documentation for transfer to CMMB engineers. iii. Preparation of internal Technical Reports and publications resulting from the above for external dissemination
In addition to providing technical contributions as above, the candidate will also support the Executive Director of the CMMB-UW Center in the following roles:
Provide general technical and organizational support for the center thrust areas.
Assist with outreach and website updates, interfacing with External TAB and CMMB engineers.
Assist with organizing work of students and postdoctoral scholars affiliated with the Center and their annual performance evaluation.
Ph.D. with 3-5 years of experience in academic research and industry research and development.
Familiarity with mobile networks and satellite communications, especially in RF, channel coding, modem, equalization and cross-layer optimization.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Prior participation in wireless standards development, system prototyping and field trials.
Solid record of publications and patents in mobile and satellite communications.
