: The Nano and Micro Sensors Department at Sandia is seeking candidates to serve as the principal investigator and technical lead of a multidisciplinary R&D team developing microtechnology\-enabled CBRNE \(Chemical, Biological, Radiation, Nuclear, Explosives\) sensor systems, with an emphasis on micro gas chromatography for chemical analysis\. This position requires the ability to lead an R&D effort in novel CBRNE systems as well as the test and evaluation of CBRNE systems\. Job responsibilities include designing, building and testing chemical detection components and systems to meet a varying range of customer agency performance requirements such as sensitivity, false alarm rate, speed, degree of autonomy, size, weight and power\. The ability to develop quantitative methods, determine limits of detection and identify target compounds in the presence of complex backgrounds is essential to our customer base\. Quantification of microcomponent and system performance as a function of operating parameters will be commonly undertaken so the ability to collaborate effectively with device designers, fabrication engineers and packaging engineers is important\. CBRNE systems of this type require interfaces between a variety of materials like gas chromatography \(GC\) stationary phases, preconcentrator \(PC\) adsorbents, and multifunctional materials for signal transduction with microfabricated components\. It is essential therefore to have experience with materials and their integration with micro components\. The ability to work with scientists and engineers to build and test functional field prototypes or point\-of\-use system prototypes is a key part of the job\. This position will entail leadership of an R&D team and the ability to perform significant program management responsibilities\. This includes proposal writing, estimation and monitoring of budgets and staffing, report preparation, designing test plans, analyzing technical data, handling customer communications, authoring technical papers, and reviewing proposals and technical progress reports\. Excellent communication skills are paramount, as is the ability to thrive in a competitive technical environment\. Required: + Ph\.D\. in chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, physics or related fields\.+ A minimum of 5 years of experience in leading the development of microsystems\-enabled sensor systems for a variety of applications in chemical analysis\.+ Experience in estimating the performance characteristics and operating parameters of PCs, GCs and detectors and systems for a variety of customer requirements+ Experience in integrating functional materials with CBRNE components and systems\.+ Experience in the operation and maintenance of laboratory facilities including GC\-FID, GC\-MS, GCXGC\-TOFMS, calibrated vapor delivery systems+ Experience in developing quantitative methods and assessing component and system performance for chemical targets in complex backgrounds+ Knowledge of polymer chemistry, anti\-fouling coatings, MOFs, ionic liquids, zeolites, high surface area carbon, silica sol gels\.+ Demonstrated experience in working in a multidisciplinary environment including scientists and engineers in the pursuit of field system development+ Significant experience in leading R&D efforts and in project management+ Proposal writing and evaluation skills+ A record of publishing peer reviewed journal articles+ Excellent communication and leadership skills+ The ability to travel in support of customer interactions and for business development+ The ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance+ Excellent references Desired: + Experience in computer programming and instrument interfacing+ Experience in laboratory ownership including writing procedures and handling environmental, safety and health documentation and responsibilities+ Experience in statistical analysis of complex chemical data+ Experience in analyzing volatile organic compounds derived from biological sources+ Experience with wearable sensor systems or UAVs+ Experience with chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemicals/materials and their detection+ Sufficient familiarity with microfabrication methods to collaborate effectively with designers, fabrication specialists and packaging specialists to create CBRNE detection components\.+ Knowledge of biological sensors and assays+ Clinical or field experience with CBRNE systems+ A current security clearance Department Description: The Nano and Micro Sensors Department at Sandia National Labs specializes in miniature sensors and sensor\-based system for a variety of sensing modalities including chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosives \(CBRNE\)\. These sensors and systems can be built into wearable, handheld, UAV or fixed/installed formats\. We have a strong emphasis on nano, micro and mesoscale fabrication in our R&D including the capability to integrate custom electronics developed in our MESA cleanroom complex\. Our technologies are designed to be non\-invasive or minimally invasive, and easy to use in the field or at the point of care\. We have a strong multi\-disciplinary effort, an entrepreneurial spirit and a willingness to partner with government, commercial/industry and university as needed to develop solutions to a variety of portable sensing problems\. We collaborate extensively with other groups at Sandia responsible for analytical and synthetic chemistry, biotechnology, bioengineering, systems biology, systems engineering, bioenergy, biodefense, nanobiology and microelectronics\. Accordingly, there is an emphasis on integrating materials, coatings, nanoparticles, etc within sensor based systems\.
