The Office of Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (OPERS) is the UCSC campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The Recreation Department, within OPERS, offers a wide variety of adventure-oriented programs, designed to welcome and engage students of diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Under the direction of the Associate Director of Recreation, the Adventure Programs Supervisor directs and manages the Adventure Outings and Surfing programs, directs and manages the Wilderness Orientation Program, assists in the management of the Recreation office, and oversees and manages the Recreation Scholarship program. This includes budget oversight, recruitment, hiring, training and evaluation of student and non-student staff, coordination of facilities, website edits and activity registration management.
The Adventure Programs Supervisor makes independent decisions on day-to-day operations and interprets and applies specialized policies and procedures especially in regards to risk associated with off-campus excursions. This position has a flexible schedule that can include days, nights and weekends. In all planning, coordination and interaction with students, staff, faculty and members of the community, the Adventure Programs Supervisor consistently applies the UCSC Principles of Community, fostering a welcoming, diverse and inclusive work environment.
Manages the daily operations for the Recreation Department's outings programs including Adventure Outings, Surfing and Wilderness Orientation. Has autonomy to analyze and resolve problems and determine appropriate action. Supervises recreation program leaders and instructors. Provides recommendations for the development of program budgets and oversees implementation and monitoring of budget, inventory and other resources. Makes recommendations for policy changes.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Outdoor Recreation, Experiential Education, or related field.
Extensive experience in outdoor recreation program planning and coordination in specific skill areas, including, but not limited to, backpacking, hiking, whitewater paddling, surfing, rock climbing, mountaineering, snow sports and bike touring.
A strong history of program management, and sound judgment in a dynamic and complex work environment.
A demonstrated knowledge of related industry best practices.
Thorough demonstration of excellent verbal and written communication skills.
