As a part of the UCSC Genomics Institute, the Junior Software Engineer will develop software for Computational Genomics Platform (CGP) to support a number of grants UCSC has received. The most significant initial project supports the global team creating the Human Cell Atlas. The goal of the project is to 'create comprehensive reference maps of all human cells - the fundamental units of life - as a basis for both understanding human health and diagnosing, monitoring, and treating disease.'
The CGP works along with an active research and development group: the Computational Genomics Lab (CGL; https://cgl.genomics.ucsc.edu/). The CGL uses big data technologies to facilitate genomic research into global health issues, and has active projects tackling cancer and heart disease. The position will provide exposure to the research and development of cutting edge technologies at the forefront of biomedical informatics and precision medicine.
Undergraduate education in computational/programming, or related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Basic knowledge of bioinformatics methods and data structures.
Strong expertise of programming languages including Python.
Working knowledge of software engineering tools and frameworks including: GitHub, Ansible, CircleCI.
