Our School of Nursing, has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time, Mental Health Counselor.
The Nursing Student Counselor provides counseling services to undergraduate and graduate nursing students of the University of Washington School of Nursing. This is a 50% part time position reporting to the Director of Student and Academic Services.
Offer personal, school-related, and professional counseling services to undergraduate and graduate nursing students. Assess presenting problems, making appropriate referrals as required. Provide appropriate interventions and brief psychotherapy for student issues, including: depression, anxiety including test anxiety, performance anxiety, phobias, grief, communication problems, and interactions with clinical instructors, relationship issues including domestic violence, stress management, PTSD, self-esteem issues, and other professional and personal issues. Collaborate with School of Nursing faculty and staff regarding serious student issues. Implement crisis assessment, intervention and suicide prevention plans as needed. Conduct individual assessments as needed. Use independent judgment regarding need for medication evaluation; coordinate referral and monitor implementation of treatment plan.
Conduct orientation sessions to help make the counseling service visible and accessible to students and faculty. Conduct workshops and seminars for nursing students in areas of personal and professional growth such as stress management, self-esteem and other issues. Develop resources on relevant topics. Develop and facilitate social support programs for a diverse nursing student body. If time permits, provide consultation for staff regarding conflict resolution, student issues, and curriculum review for content areas with the potential to trigger mental health and emotional issues for students. Schedule student appointments. Maintain appropriate confidential student records. Provide quarterly reports to Director of Student and Academic Services. Obtain regular supervision. Maintain current certification and continuing education.
Requirements: A minimum of a Master's degree in a counseling-related discipline. WA State Licensed Mental Health Counselor. Three years' experience in counseling working with individuals and with groups. Basic computer skills. Experience with students in health-related fields.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
