The Disabled Students' Program (DSP) works to ensure that all students with disabilities have equal access to educational opportunities at Berkeley and helps students achieve academic and personal success. DSP offers a wide range of services for eligible students with verified disabilities, including academic accommodations, auxiliary services, and alternative media. In addition, DSP offers proctoring to faculty and access services to departments that need to arrange accommodations for their events and activities.
Incumbent manages the provision of academic auxiliary services that are legally mandated. These services include sign language interpreting, computer assisted real time transcription (CART), note-taking, alternative media (the conversion of print materials into an alternative media format such as Braille, electronic text, and audio format) and proctoring. In accordance with federal and state law, plans, develops, and implements processes to provide auxiliary services that are effective in order to assure that students with disabilities are able to access the academic environment. Incumbent will also share responsibility for day to day oversight of overall DSP operations in conjunction with the DSP Director.
Responsible for day to day supervision and oversight of four auxiliary services units and staff including: Proctoring, Note taking, CART/Interpreting, Alternative Media. Shared responsibility for day to day oversight of DSP operations with Director and Supervisors. Collaborates with campus entities to promote and privide disability access and awareness. Responsible for program development and evaluation/assessment of the effectiveness of four auxiliary services units. Develops and collects comprehensive reports on each auxiliary services unit. Ensures that programs, practices, and procedures of assigned units meet federal and state legal requirements. Sets and implements short-term and long-term strategic goals for the auxiliary services units under the position's supervision in collaboration with the Director and in line with the goals for the entire unit. Develops and implements hiring processes, develops job descriptions, designs and implements orientation and training of staff, and provides ongoing leadership and performance management for assigned units. Takes corrective action when appropriate. Secures and allocates the budget resources needed to meet the scope and objectives of the program, and to meet disability compliance. Facilitates billing for auxiliary services to external entities. Provides professional guidance, technical advice, and direction to DSP Director, supervisors and staff, involving the most complex and sensitive issues surrounding the provision of auxiliary services to students with disabilities.
Minimum five years of supervisory experience leading a team of administrative and technical staff. A minimum of five years of professional experience working in disability services in a university setting; Advanced knowledge of auxiliary services units and their functions. Through knowledge of the legal framework involving academic accommodations and services for students with disabilities in higher education through state and federal laws and regulations. Ability to interpret and apply state and federal laws, University policies and procedures, and collective bargaining agreements. Experience working in a union environment. Thorough knowledge of procedures for resolving disability accommodation issues. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a broad range of students, faculty, staff, senior administrators, and community leaders. Experience in mediating, managing, and resolving conflicts. Employs open and clear decision-making processes. Effective decision-making and organizational skills. Experience in project management and business process improvement practices. Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and coach staff members. Experience with managing supervisors preferred. Demonstrated experience with assistive technologies as they pertain to academic support services for students with disabilities in postsecondary educational settings. Demonstrated capacity to identify emerging assistive technologies and implement those technologies as academic supports. Demonstrated knowledge of FERPA and ability to maintain confidentiality at a high level. Ability to provide consultation to faculty and support staff on best practices for the implementation of auxiliary services accommodations for students with disabilities. Demonstrated ability to keep abreast of current trends, industry standards, and best practices for providing proctoring, note-taking, CART-captioning and alternative media to students with disabilities. Ability to recognize and recommend necessary changes in user and/or operations procedures Demonstrated problem solving and analytical thinking skills with ability to approach problems logically and systematically Fluency in both PC and Mac operating systems Experience selecting, troubleshooting and installing assistive technologies used in Notetaking, Proctoring, CART-Captioning and Alternative Media.
Education/Training: Advanced degree in related area or equivalent experience
