This position is part time (20 hours per week) at Cornell Botanic Gardens from approximately September 1-November 22, 2017. Assist with the care of gardens throughout Cornell Botanic Gardens program areas, specifically Zucker Shrub Garden, with direction provided by horticultural staff. Collaborate with the horticultural staff to maintain gardens, grounds, trails etc. ensuring Cornell Botanic Gardens' high aesthetic standards are met. Amend soil to provide recommended growing conditions. Prune woody plants to improve health or achieve desired growth habit. Use appropriate hand tools to clear brush as needed to open sites for new plantings. Weed and mulch planting beds, chip paths, edge beds, divide herbaceous perennials. Check both plant identification and interpretive labels and notify plant records manager of any missing tags. Complete status change cards recording plant movements into and out of the specified collections, as well as reason(s) for plant loss and failure. Operate small-scale power equipment such as ATV's, string trimmers, hand mowers, mini trucks, roto-tillers, and tractors. Assist greenhouse manager as needed. Other gardening related duties as needed.
High school degree. Requires physical fitness, must be able to lift heavy objects, and move more than 75 pounds. Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and receive university approval for operating vehicles. Ability to operate light-duty equipment including small-scale power equipment such as roto-tillers, and tractors. Must be personable and flexible, and take pride in their work. Ability to work in a team environment and develop effective working relationships with a variety of constituents such as students, visitors, coworkers, supervisors and faculty. Must be able to communicate effectively with staff, visitors, and other constituents. Must be willing to work under varying climatic conditions (heat, precipitation, etc.). Applicants must have the ability and willingness to work in an environment that utilizes pesticides as a plant management tool. May be required to report to work outside of the regularly scheduled shift to address time-sensitive operational needs, or to assist with departmental emergencies, or to deal with issues of public safety.
