Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Receptionist/Switchboard Operator for the Intake Department at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. The primary purpose of the Senior Receptionist/Switchboard Operator position is to answer all incoming telephone calls to the Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) and distribute them to the appropriate location within the organization in professional and expeditious manner.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Operates the internal paging system.
Greets patients and visitors as they arrive and directs them to the appropriate location.
Contributes to the Research mission and participates in quality improvement activities in order to improve the quality, consistency, and efficiency of services provided. Position requires interaction with patients in all age categories and all populations with an emphasis on patients with cancer.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Two (2) years of experience required involving receptionist and general office duties.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to read, write, and speak or communicate in English.
Bilingual skills (English/Spanish)
The ability to respond effectively to inquiries from patients.
Demonstrated ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Strong oral and written communications skills.
Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
Must have proficiency in the use of the internet.
Demonstrated understanding of the principles of guest relations and be able to maintain a professional demeanor and customer service orientation under busy and stressful situations.
Experience on console and/or switchboard equipment a plus.
Knowledge of hospital or medical office operations.
Prior experience in the use of a practice management system.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
PHYSICALDEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25 lbs.
WORKENVIRONMENT: Fast paced, high-pressure office/clinic/hospital environment with stringent deadlines and moderate to distracting noise. Requires the ability to work and cooperate with faculty, students, managers, employees and the public at all levels in order to exchange ideas and information. Clinical setting includes minimal exposure to blood, odors and exposure to infections and communicable diseases. Requires the ability to work with all patient populations with a primary focus on cancer.
