The University of Virginia Libraries establishes deep connections with faculty and students in ways that foster excellence in current and emerging research, scholarship, teaching and learning. The Social Sciences Librarian will support that mission by collaborating with a cohort of social science, science and engineering, and data librarians to: support research and teaching in the social and behavioral sciences; advance and promote existing services to enhance research across the lifecycle and across all levels of research expertise; identify emerging needs in these fields and envision new services in response; and develop and strengthen relationships between the library, faculty and students, and other centers on campus, positioning the library as a key partner.
Research and Scholarship: Respond to faculty, students, and staff in select departments on research information requests and contribute to and enhance research and information services and programs. Collaborate with the Collections team to ensure acquisition of and access to appropriate resources and materials; and with other liaisons to support interdisciplinary research, scholarship, and collections. Consult with social scientists on data discovery, on import and preparation for secondary data sources, and on data sharing and documentation for original collections.
Outreach and Engagement: Educate faculty, students, and staff in select departments about and promote a range of library services, including scholarly communication and publishing, data services, and digital initiatives. Maintain awareness of changes and trends within relevant disciplines and propose and promote library services to engage new models of research within the social and behavioral sciences.
Teaching and Learning: Engage with faculty and instructors to integrate information, data, and digital literacy concepts and skills into the curriculum. Develop and offer library-sponsored classes and workshops to support information and data literacies across the university, and partner with colleagues in Teaching and Learning to create novel and improved approaches.
An advanced degree in a social science discipline or a Master's degree in library or information science with evidence of a strong background in a social science field.
Experience in scientific workflows through coursework or research sufficient to demonstrate mastery of social science research methods, including experience using quantitative data.
Teaching experience and competence in translating technical knowledge and discipline-based research methodologies to undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty and staff.
Knowledge of social science data sources and data curation practices.
Familiarity with the operation of a research university, and ability to work effectively and collegially in a team-based environment with colleagues, clients, and administrators at all levels.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Knowledge of or experience with quantitative data analysis applications (such as SPSS, Stata, or R) and ability to support patrons with reading in and preparing data, or willingness to develop the necessary knowledge.
Experience with sponsored research, including outreach and education for broader impact requirements.
