Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Life and Dean of Students Pay Grade 75 The Division of Student Life at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Life. This is an exempt, 12 month, full-time, non-tenure track staff position. The Division: The Division of Student Life is comprised of over 400 staff that serve our students through 19 departments and functions. Staff are actively engaged in the lives of our students, living and learning with them in our residence halls, student union, and other campus environments. The Position: The Assistant Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students AVC/DOS provides administrative direction for eight units within the Division of Student Life. This position assists in providing learning and personal development opportunities for students. In addition, the AVC/DOS assumes an advocacy role for students while supporting them through educational. social, cultural, and leadership development opportunities, as well as serves as an ombudsperson for non-academic matters and works with other departments to provide a safe campus environment. Specifically, the AVC/DOS assists with the implementation of the distressed student protocol as well as general campus protocols involving other problematic situations. (i.e., suicide attempts, threats, disruptions. student death, serious illness and or injury and sexual assault). Position Responsibilities: Organization and Administrative Management: Performs organizational and administrative tasks to support eight departments and directors: Manages and influences the campus environment that promotes student success through collaboration; Utilizes oral and written communication through speaking and writing. Programming Responsibilities: Plans and coordinates programs within the Division of Student Life and the University to contribute to student learning. Interdepartmental Responsibilities: Serves on University and Student Life committees to determine policy and create change. Crisis Management: Assists students who are experiencing crisis of various levels; Works with faculty, staff and parents to assist students in crisis; Serves on the Case Management Review Team to assist distressed and distressing students: Makes visits to students who are hospitalized. Ombudsperson: Assists students and parents with both non-academic and academic issues and concerns. Staff Supervision: Supervises approximately 60 staff directly and indirectly. Advising and Counseling: Serves as Advisor to the Student Government Association Evaluation and Assessment: Assesses the effectiveness of programs and services as well as learning outcomes related to these programs and services. Conducts Departmental Program Reviews to provide internal and external evaluation of eight areas reporting to the AVC/DOS. Budget and Financial Management: Establishes funding priorities and manages departmental budget consistent with institutional policies, procedures and protocols. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Education: This position requires a Master's degree in higher education, college student personnel or related field Experience: Substantial experience in student affairs: demonstrated leadership ability and administrative accomplishments in positions of increasing responsibility. Demonstrated commitment to the intellectual, professional, and personal development of a diverse student body. A history of working collaboratively with diverse constituencies. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Ability to lead a team of seasoned staff in the provision of programs and services; Significant knowledge of developmental issues of college students and demonstrated knowledge of and sensitivity to multicultural issues; Strong interpersonal skills, including strong oral, written, and listening communication capabilities; Ability to utilize higher education assessment models, especially those applicable to student life and /or and student development/services; and Effective written and oral communications skills to allow the incumbent to serve as a representative for the Vice Chancellor for Student Life within the University and in the community at large; and, Ability to collaborate with colleagues in other University divisions. Preferred Qualifications: Education: A doctoral degree in a related field is preferred. Experience: Administrative experience at the Dean, Associate Dean, Assistant Dean or Director level within a Division of Student Life; An understanding of organizational dynamics; budgeting and financial management, staff supervision; an understanding of student development as it relates to student learning; Understanding of legal issues and university, federal and state statues impacting higher education; Demonstration of effective collaboration with Student Health Integration models; Superior leadership and management skills, including interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills; and Excellent presentation and training skills.
