Facilities Services is the large and diverse organization that operates and maintains the Seattle campus facilities, grounds, utility distribution, transportation, waste management and environmental sustainability programs, and provides engineering direction for campus construction. Facilities Services has intermittent openings in a variety of locations for Temporary Painters. These individuals will perform skilled journey-level painting work on the interior and exterior of UW buildings and facilities.
Typical Responsibilities Include:
Prepare surfaces for painting or finishing by scraping, sanding, washing, or otherwise removing dirt, grease, old finishes, and rust scale; remove paint from surfaces by using sanders, wire brushes, and paint and varnish removers;
Preparatory to painting, make minor repairs in plaster, sheetrock, metal, wood and masonry surfaces by filling with putty, caulks, fiberglass, resin, etc.
Apply primers, sealers, stains and under coats with brushes, rollers, or spray painting equipment, striping machine, etc.; paint machinery, piping, floors, and walls; apply hi-tech industrial enamels and epoxies;
Prepare and finish or refinish woodwork and cabinets;
Mix and blend colors for a wide variety of paints, epoxies, high performance industrial enamels, etc. for brush, roller, conventional or airless sprayers;
Move furniture and place protective drop cloths; tape baseboards, glass, and other surfaces when needed;
Clean brushes, rollers, spray and other painting equipment with water, solvent, thinner or other appropriate cleaners to keep equipment and tools in good working condition; observing safety requirements;
Tape and flush smooth wall sheetrock joints using trowels, hawks, taping knives and other taping equipment; apply texture material to walls and ceilings using texture machines, pumps and hand tools; install vinyl and paper wall coverings;
Install, work from and remove scaffolding, stages, planks, ladders, jacks, spider staging, JLG systems and other work platforms;
Drive service truck as required; load and unload materials and supplies;
Develop preliminary cost estimates for installations and repairs;
Provide required assistance using respirators and protective clothing in support of the asbestos abatement program;
May operate and perform minor maintenance on sandblasters, power washers, striping machines, airless and conventional paint sprayers, and spray booth; operate engraving machine, Leteron machine;
May operate ladder and boom trucks and forklift;
May refinish gym floors and other hardwood floors; sealing, stripping, and sanding;
May direct helpers as required;
May perform work in other trades;

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a painter; OR full journey status as a painter in a union; OR four years of applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. May require valid State of Washington driver's license.
