The Science Bound program at Iowa State University is seeking a Student Programs Coordinator. Science Bound is Iowa State's premier program for increasing the number of youth from racial and ethnic groups who are underrepresented in science and technology fields (including Black, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American Indian) who pursue careers in these areas. The program currently serves more than 400 students and their families in three Iowa school districts, as well as more than 160 students on the Iowa State campus.
The position will develop and manage a comprehensive secondary and university program for students from ethnically and racially diverse backgrounds. This individual will be responsible for coordinating and delivering culturally responsive and relevant after school programs, summer programs, leadership programs, and retreats, as well as integrate information technologies that expand students’ access to, and learning in, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Additionally, the Student Programs Coordinator teaches university seminars and advises students at Iowa State in ways that support student transition and retention in STEM. The position will manage student staff, collect and access data for program evaluation, and design and incorporate information technologies that expand students’ knowledge and skills for learning in ways that enhance communication and student learning.
The successful candidate will possess a strong commitment to the philosophy and practice of asset-based and culturally relevant pedagogy; strong oral and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills for working collaboratively with diverse students, faculty, and staff; and strong administrative skills.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree; OR a combination of education and/or related experience totaling 6 years unless otherwise specified under supplemental required education and experience. Experience must be at a comparable level and directly related to the duties of this position.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Experience with informal pre-college educational programs serving youth of color who are pursuing STEM degrees;
Experience developing, implementing and evaluating programs for students of color, primarily first generation college;
Higher education experience related to culture, family structure, and unique issues of students and families of color;
Experience connecting families to community resources, as well as experience with office systems management and student worker training and management;
Experience teaching academic development courses at the university level;
Education and experience with instructional technology design development and implementation for formal and informal learning.
Some evenings and Saturday work hours are required.
