Information Resources & Technology (IRT) provides essential information technology services for campus operations and innovative technology solutions to facilitate the accomplishment of strategic campus goals.
The Director of University Reporting and Data Services reports to the Senior Director of Strategic Projects and leads and manages a high-performing team of analysts, developers, and modelers.
The Director of University Reporting and Data Services is responsible for delivering a sustainable data warehouse and reporting platform to meet current and emerging campus data needs. The platform will meet both strategic and operational needs for data and reports for multiple divisions including Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Advancement, and Budget and Finance. When possible, reports should be designed to meet campus-wide needs that span divisions. The platform currently includes Oracle, Cognos, Informatica, SPSS Modeler, and Tableau.
This position interacts with the Chief Information Officer and other senior leaders by participating in strategic, campus-wide projects that involve using data or analytics to influence decision making or measure progress toward campus-wide goals.
The Director serves as project manager for both internal and campus-wide projects. The team uses principles of agile development to produce deliverables. The Director plays a key role in gathering requirements and ensuring that partners stay engaged and participate in acceptance testing to bring projects to closure.
This position serves as campus-wide leader in areas such reporting, analytics, and visualizations. This position often participates in campus-wide projects with goals that involve reports or analytics, and will collaborate with and support the University President’s office on data governance and analytics.
This position will serve as a key resource for IRT and the campus in terms of best practices in data governance such as data ownership, data access, data reporting, data definitions, data usage, data privacy, etc.
This position will engage campus stakeholders and serve as an advocate for data-driven discussions, decision-making, and actions. This position will play a key role in helping Sac State be intentional about our use of data and advance in terms of data maturity.
This position handles vendor relationships for our data warehouse and reporting platform and coordinates renewals and other aspects of procurement.
This position will access information assets containing protected data as defined in the CSU Data Classification Standard only if needed in order to accomplish an authorized task. Access must be based on the principles of need-to-know and least privilege. This position will report any real or potential risk or threat to the security of campus devices, applications, or data to the Information Security Office.
Education/Experience 1. Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as management information systems, data analytics, computer science, social science, education, statistics, data science, etc. 2. Demonstrated experience leading a high-performing team and supervising staff; responsibilities include setting performance standards and measures; providing appropriate levels of training, mentoring, and professional development; and fostering a strong sense of shared accountability and cross-functional communication and collaboration. 3. Demonstrated experience working in a leadership role that involves a data warehouse or reporting platform; role involves tasks such as development of dashboards and reports, needs analysis, testing, quality assurance, performance tuning, and capacity planning. 4. Demonstrated experience with gathering and documenting requirements from stakeholders to develop reports and visualizations. 5. Demonstrated experience managing complex, time-sensitive projects. 6. Some experience managing vendor relationships. 7. Demonstrated experience with continuous improvement of services and processes.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities 8. Demonstrated ability to interact with senior leaders effectively and to maintain collegial relationships with colleagues at all levels. 9. Familiarity with at least one industry standard database, ETL solution, and reporting tool. 10. Excellent writing, speaking, and presentation skills. 11. Knowledge of data governance concepts. 12. Knowledge of best practices for safeguarding systems, data, and identities.
