The Digital Lab Manager is a (3-year renewable) position in the University of Cincinnati Libraries. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and diverse organization in a great university, great city, with high potential for interesting technical work.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Directs the operations of the Digital Lab including managing and executing digitization projects and workflows and ensuring successful project completion. Operates and maintains digitization equipment and software, data quality control, creation and maintenance of workflows, digital conversion, and statistical reporting. Works in a highly collaborative Library environment to increase and enrich online access to the Libraries' collection of rare and unique materials.
RELATIONSHIP AND AUTHORITY: Reports to Head of Digital Collections & Repositories. Supervises student assistants. Collaborates with librarians, archivists, technologists, and vendors in digitization and digital preservation activities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prioritizes and manages digitization projects and workflow, including physical flow of original materials, producing cost and/or time estimates, digitizing according to institutional specifications, and ensuring successful completion and delivery of digitized materials as specified, on time, and on budget.
Operates and maintains digitization equipment, workstations, and related software in the Digital Lab and distributed in the Libraries' archival centers. Reviews, recommends, and implements upgrades and enhancements, in coordination with Library IT Services.
Trains and supervises student assistants to carry out digitization and digital workflow responsibilities.
Coordinates quality control of workflows and standards for in-house and out-sourced digitization projects. Works with digitization vendors, including communicating metadata specifications, quality control standards, and confirming that digital files received meet specifications.
Maintains documentation for equipment, workflows, and program digitization standards. Provides oral and written reports, including reporting of statistics on status and usage of digitized materials and collections.
Assists in coding and/or executing batch processes for processing and exporting digital content.
Participates in and supports digital preservation activities including assessment of digitization projects outcomes, developing best practices for long-term protection, retention, and access, and proposals for external funding.
Serves on groups related to digitization as well as other committees when appropriate or necessary.
Collaborates with colleagues in UC Libraries and other units on campus on digital projects including digital exhibits, transcription, and outreach.
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
2 years of recent experience, education or training in digital imaging, and operating and maintaining a range of capture and imaging technology, camera and scanner hardware.
2 years of relevant project management experience, with demonstrated ability to manage projects (both in-house and out-sourced), plan and execute workflows, track progress and costs, and meet deadlines and objectives.
Demonstrated knowledge of best practices and trends for digital copy photography, capture, color management, and profiling.
Working knowledge of best practices, formats, conversions, and standards for digital objects.
Familiarity with standards for care and handling of rare and fragile materials, including audio-visual.
Familiarity with metadata practices and standards such as Dublin Core, METS, MODS, PREMIS, VRA, EAD, and TEI.
Experience with software for digital image editing, OCR, and data management and processing.
Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to work under time constraints and to meet regularly recurring deadlines on multiple, concurrent projects.
Strong analytical problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and results-oriented approaches.
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, particularly about technical processes to non-technical personnel.
Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and in a group across organization lines in a dynamic, evolving environment.
Graduate degree in a related field.
Experience working in a research library or other cultural heritage institution.
Familiarity with audio-visual content digitization technologies and processes.
Ability to write and execute scripts from the Linux command line.
Ability to write code in PHP, Python, or Ruby.
Experience with batch processing related to image conversion and manipulation.
Familiarity with applications to track workflow, time, cost, outcomes, and usage/analytics data.
Working knowledge of a digital repository platform, e.g. Hydra, Fedora Commons, DSpace.
Working knowledge of digital preservation and solutions, e.g. DPN, Academic Preservation Trust.
