The College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services Student Services Center seeks an Academic Advisor to join their team. The Student Services Center (SSC) purpose is to provide support for the College's diverse undergraduate population. This is an extremely high visibility position, requiring a high degree of accountability and responsibility to advise our School of Criminal Justice and School of Information Technology student populations in both an online/digital and in-person format. Daily work involves handling information that is often sensitive and confidential in nature: discretion is of critical importance. The individual will exercise sound judgment as it relates to dealing with students, faculty, staff, administrative personnel, parents and representatives of outside organizations. This person must be a resourceful and disciplined individual, dedicated to the mission, goals, and objectives of higher education as represented by UC, CECH and the SSC.
The Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Support Services or a designated administrator by means of observation of advising, student feedback, staff, faculty, and members of the University community assesses performance.
Advise students on matters ranging from developing academic plans to academic policy, career options and student engagement opportunities in person or in an online format
Assist undergraduate students in developing educational plans, choosing courses, and exploring majors, minors, and career opportunities
Support students in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals and assist student evaluate each option, including possible outcomes and implications
Recommend actions related to probation, suspension and dismissal of students
Refer students to appropriate departmental offices, faculty, and support services for help with academic, personal, and career counseling, academic skills development, and financial aid support.
Monitor students' academic progress towards degree, and certify degrees upon completion
Identify current and potential needs or problem areas (ex. Study skills, tutoring) and work with students identified as at-risk
Evaluate and process admissions and graduation records, evaluate transfer credit, substitute courses and the use of courses to meet graduation requirements
Using University systems, maintain student files, records, and advisor's notes
Maintain knowledge of regulations and policies that impact students' educational options
Liaison, assist, or manage programming events offered by the Student Services Center
Perform related duties based on departmental and/or college needs.
Utilize a student-centered lens and approach in decision-making and provide a high level of service orientation to all constituencies
Actively participate as a constructive, outcomes-oriented member of the team
Prioritize projects and manage time as aligned with the critical priorities of the job
Communicate effectively and professionally with respectful, inclusive, and supportive interactions
Seek feedback and respond appropriately to supervisory coaching and staff expectations
Manage conflict appropriately. Contribute positively to healthy team dynamics with peers and colleagues
Bachelor's degree and one (1) year experience; -OR- Associate's degree and three (3) years experience; -OR- five (5) years experience. Experience must be in advising high school and/or college students or related field.
We are looking for someone with knowledge in the field of advising as well as online/digital advising and how best to reach out, retain, advise, and graduate students in campus and online programs. Student centered, high level of work ethic, team player, timely, great interpersonal communication skills, extremely detail oriented, able to retain a high volume of college, programmatic, and university related information, and able to critically think through situations. Employee must be able to multitask and work independently.
Annual Salary: $40,800/year plus full benefit's package
Hours: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Standard Days Worked: M-F
Type of Appointment: Full-Time (12 Months)
Work Location: 360 Teachers-Dyer Complex (Campus-based)
