Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Institute for Transportation (InTrans) is currently accepting applications for a Communications Specialist II or III.
As part of InTrans' publications group, this position supports InTrans' mission through a combination of duties, including copyedit and/or format (quality control) for InTrans publications, with emphasis on technical reports, summaries, and documents; work independently or as part of ad hoc teams to write and/or edit and help produce many print and electronic technical and informational publications, including research reports, technical summaries, manuscripts, technical and nontechnical newsletters, manuals, web pages and websites, etc.; perform periodic administrative, planning, and reporting activities and participate in meetings for publications and communications activities; communicate with federal and state sponsors and with researchers to ensure overall quality control of research reports, adhere to copyright and re-use permissions, meet Section 508 compliance (federal law requiring electronic and information technology is accessible to people with disabilities), and publish reports through the federal TRID (Transport Research International Documentation) database and elsewhere; and advance InTrans' research and technology transfer by contributing to proposal development and editing papers for publications, including peer-reviewed journals.
The Communications Specialist III will work with a higher level of leadership, initiative, and independence.
The successful candidate will have excellent technical writing and editing skills and a thorough attention to details; be able to work effectively alone and as part of a group; be able to effectively perform many tasks for multiple concurrent projects, meet deadlines, and work within project budgets; be able to use templates and stylesheets; exhibit excellent interpersonal communication; and be proficient in Microsoft Office (particularly Word) and have experience using Adobe Creative Suite particularly InDesign and Acrobat Pro. Must act professionally and show respect for all in the workplace.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
—Experience writing and editing professional, technical and/or scientific materials, especially research proposals —Experience using Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator) —Experience with page layout and formatting in Microsoft Word, using style sheets and following style guidelines —Experience that demonstrates familiarity with Windows-based platforms —Experience in a transportation-related environment —Experience that demonstrates familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style
