UW Tacoma's Institute of Technology has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Computer Specialist.
The Senior Computer Specialist reports to the Director of Operations and will work in conjunction with the Senior Lab Engineer and another Senior Computer Specialist. This position will focus primarily on providing support for the Institute of Technology Electrical Engineering labs; be responsible for assisting faculty in designing lab exercises for all Institute programs; assist faculty with monitoring, purchasing and maintaining lab equipment and supplies; and work closely with students in the labs to provide support and advice on academic projects.
Design and build course-related demonstrations and "hands on" lab exercises for the Institute's undergraduate programs in coordination with faculty and at the direction of the Assistant Director for Operations.
Assist students with particular problems in their course projects; provide advice and technical support to students. The lab engineer will help implement lab experiments in junior and senior level EE courses such as circuits, electronics, VLSI, signal processing, embedded systems, electromagnetics, power, machines, and communication.
Ensure that facilities, equipment and supplies are up-to-date and ready for classroom usage; support program curriculum and student learning outcomes; oversee lab equipment by making sure that it is working and in good condition; check in/out lab materials/equipment to students as needed; maintain inventory of hardware for course usage (supplies, equipment, etc.) and make purchases as needed.
Install, update, configure and maintain software on lab computers to support student learning (in conjunction with other Sr Computer Specialist); provide technical support for the lab to ensure reliable operation, timely upgrades and coordination of local and remote resources. Develop labs for network and internet security class, and cyber security bootcamp for the Master in Cybersecurity and Leadership.
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology
-Minimum 3 years of experience to include supporting student laboratories in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering and supporting virtual environments.
-Performing progressively more complex technical support tasks.
-Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, user liaison skills and personal interaction abilities.
-Demonstrated excellent customer service skills.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
-Demonstrated knowledge of Controls, Electronics, Communication and Power Systems.
-Demonstrated knowledge of device design and fabrication, both electrical and mechanical.
-Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
-Demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions for academic, instructional, business and research needs.
-Experience in a large and complex computing environment.
-Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with faculty, students, and end users.
-Experience evaluating and implementing software and hardware solutions.
-Ability to write clear technical documentation and/or papers.
-Ability to give clear and engaging verbal presentations to an audience.
-Strong interpersonal skills.
