Neighborhood Student Success Collaborative Department. Will perform the functions of Academic Advisor as follows in the context of the Michigan State University Neighborhoods, comprised of a diverse student population, but not exclusively, first-year and sophomore students who have not indicated a major preference. In addition to the above function of advisor in the NSSC, Advising Directors will: work directly with other administrative staff; review data related to the success of existing student success programs; make recommendations, based on data, for programmatic and policy changes; consider programming and staffing alternatives that would enhance the delivery of needed services; identify challenges and recommend solutions to successfully fulfill their responsibilities to these challenges; explore/recommend new programmatic initiatives that could enhance advisors’ability effectively to support student success; bring individual and trend data to the Student Success Team for consideration; work with the advising staff, the Assistant Dean and the Neighborhood Directors; develop systems to effectively outreach to students; conduct assessment of advising efforts in the Neighborhood: take responsibility for a major function of the NSSC Advising staff (e.g., reinstatements, SAP, EASE, APR, readmission, AOP); recommend and participate in professional development; supervise Neighborhood Academic Advisors.
Responsibilities may include advising on: enrollment reviews, probation conferences, major selection and transitions, referrals, course approvals, career options, academic orientation, and study abroad; understand, interpret, and implement academic policies and procedures; interact effectively with Neighborhood colleagues and partners (e.g.,Neighborhood Directors, Residence Education and Housing Services professionals and student staff, health clinic providers, Intercultural Aides supervisors,and other members of the Neighborhood Student Success Team), as well as academic and student affairs professionals in the academic colleges and Enrollment Services; use digital systems (e.g., Electronic Student Academic Folder, Degree Navigator, Student Information System, EAB Student Success Dashboard) to initiate and facilitate advising interactions, maintain confidential records, enter information about students, and respond to referrals from others; participate in planning and implementing Neighborhood and campus-wide initiatives to promote student success (e.g., Marathon of majors, population-specific outreach); facilitate a section of an undergraduate student success seminar.
A masters degree; three to five years’ experience in academic advising; excellent interpersonal communication skills; commitment to undergraduate student success; demonstrated ability to work with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds; ability to access, understand, and interpret data from multiple sources to facilitate advising interactions; creativity and flexibility in creating an environment for student success; ability to use data to evaluate individual and group efforts to promote student success through academic advising.
