Reporting to an Infrastructure Technology Services (ITS) DevOps Manager, this person will work as a Senior Engineer within the Harvard University Information Technology ITS DevOps Group. The primary focus will be to provide technical support for the systems infrastructure maintained by the HUIT DevOps team. This support includes myriad environments running on Linux and Windows operating systems, ranging from ERP systems such as Oracle EBusiness Suite and PeopleSoft to standalone web environments utilizing Apache, Weblogic, and Tomcat, and databases such as Oracle, SQLServer and mySQL .
ITS DevOps Engineers work on supporting an applications and systems portfolio for various HUIT customers. As a Senior Engineer, this position will act as an Agile project lead within the ITS DevOps team for various projects. This position will carry out project work as well as assign and coordinate project work within the ITS DevOps team. This position will also act as a primary liaison to customers on supported systems, working with them to plan, architect and execute infrastructure and application deployments. As a Senior Engineer, this position will also provide mentorship and leadership to non-senior Engineers and to the team as a whole and will help to guide, develop and implement standards and best practices. DevOps responsibilities will include installing, configuring, upgrading and patching operating system, database, web server and application software as needed; managing and monitoring multiple development, test and production environments; triaging and resolving operational issues; working with development teams on system design and performance tuning; working with release management staff to plan and deploy releases to production-1 and production environments, and designing and implementing system and server security protocols. This position also requires working directly with internal customers to provide analysis, recommendations and solutions for creating, upgrading, integrating, and managing systems in a distributed environment.
This position will support applications and infrastructure deployed to multiple platforms, both on premise and in the Cloud. Candidates should have experience supporting systems in private data centers, public or private clouds, and/or hybrid cloud environments.
As a member of the Harvard community, this individual will work collaboratively and is expected to develop solid working relationships with HUIT customers, staff, management, consultants and vendors. This individual will also provide mentorship and guidance to HUIT technical teams, building awareness of best practices and operational procedures. A strong team player is highly desired.
This position requires providing 24x7 on-call support, on a rotational basis, for production systems supported by the ITS DevOps team which includes applications running on premise as well as applications running in the AWS cloud.
This position also requires keeping up with emerging technology and trends with respect to Enterprise applications and systems.

Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered:
An advanced degree in computer science, computer information systems or mathematics and/or equivalent work experience is required.
More than five years' experience working as a DBA, System Administrator or DevOps Engineer in supporting multiple Enterprise systems on a variety of operating systems in a large, complex data center environment is also required.
Solid working experience in either database and applications administration or systems administration. This experience should include designing, building, installing, configuring and supporting web based systems, web and application server software such as Apache and Weblogic, Linux and/or Windows operating systems, or relational database systems such as Oracle, SQLSever, or mySQL in both production and non production environments.
The following skills are highly preferred:
All candidates must have strong written and oral communication skills, strong technical documentation skills, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to conduct research into database and application issues, standards and products as required.
Candidates must be highly self-motivated and directed and have proven analytical and problem-solving skills.
The ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment as well as experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is a must.
