The League of American Orchestras (americanorchestras.org) leads, supports, and champions America’s orchestras and the vitality of the music they perform. Founded in 1942 and chartered by Congress in 1962, the League links a national network of thousands of instrumentalists, conductors, managers and administrators, board members, volunteers, and business partners. Its diverse membership of 800 orchestras across North America runs the gamut from world-renowned symphonies to community groups, from summer festivals to student and youth ensembles. The only national organization dedicated solely to the orchestral experience, the League is a nexus of knowledge and innovation, advocacy, and leadership advancement for managers, musicians, volunteers, and boards. Position Summary: The Major Gift Officer reports to the Vice President for Development and is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and growing major gift donors to the League.
Partner with the Vice President of Development to develop personalized cultivation and solicitation plans and relationship management strategies for donor portfolio.
Identify, qualify and manage a portfolio of 75-100 major donors and prospects. Major gift is defined as $2,500 or more.
Spend 75% of time visiting with existing and newly identified major /planned donor prospects.
Partner with major donors, including board members, individuals and other League advocates to identify new prospects for the League’s donor pipeline.
Develop communication tools and solicitation materials that help donors and advocates understand the value of the League’s important work.
Provide timely, written reports regarding the outcome of cultivation and solicitation actions; and track activity in Raisers Edge.
Qualifications: Must be an action-oriented, highly energetic professional with the following attributes: a track record of building donor relationships and closing gifts; creative thinker, who is skilled at inspiring, influencing and engaging people; collegial, collaborative and self-confident, with a passion for the League’s mission.
Additional requirements include: Bachelor’s degree. 3-5 years of development/fundraising experience, including individual giving. Strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills with exceptional attention to detail. Knowledge of donor/database management; proficiency in Raisers Edge required. Solid computer skills: proficiency in Microsoft Excel/Word/PowerPoint. Ability to work with high impact board members, donors, prospects and senior staff.
