Members of the Medical Genetics faculty conduct research in most areas of human and medical genetics and modern molecular biology. They work in a wide range of settings within the University of Washington, the Veterans Administration Puget Sound Health Care System, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Our faculty and affiliates include one Nobel laureate, fifteen diplomats of the American Board of Medical Genetics, six members of the National Academy of Sciences, and members of the Institute of Medicine, and two members of the Institute of Medicine.
The Division of Medical Genetics in the Department of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time (60% FTE) Research Scientist/Engineer 2. The Research Scientist reports directly to the PI and is expected to work independently and collaboratively with a highly interactive group of fellow research personnel. While the RS2 would receive guidance from other members of the group regarding experimental planning, the RS2 would be expected to perform complex technical tasks and basic troubleshooting autonomously. Initiative, problem solving ability, and willingness to learn new procedures and techniques are therefore essential.
Duties to include:
Develop new laboratory techniques, formulate hypotheses and design experiments to corroborate them
Obtaining and preparing brain tissues from mice, including perfusion and tissue sectioning.
Extracting tissues for photomicroscopy and electron microscopy
Perform histochemistry and immunohistochemistry
Collect images and assist in pathologic interpretation
Proactively identify potential problems and address immediately or bring to the attention of the appropriate team member.
Interpret results of experiments, and participate in manuscript writing
Support and participate in regulatory and certification processes and laboratory compliance.
Collaborate with and support the PI/supervisor with multiple laboratory experiments, as delegated by the PI/supervisor.
Prepare, optimize and execute experiment protocols; analyze the data and generate and present summary and reports for research projects and laboratory activities per instruction
Perform related duties as required.

Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular genetics or other similar field plus at least 2 years previous experience in research lab operations.
Ability to work in a fast paced laboratory environment.
Good organizational and interpersonal skills
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Appointment to this position is contingent upon obtaining satisfactory results from a criminal background check.
This position requires some flexibility scheduling work to accommodate experiments with fixed-time courses.
